Talking?

I know I haven't been around in a really long while.. like 6 months. But life with my son nearly prevents computer time, and along with my 2 older girls and being pregnant again, I just haven't been in a social mood. lol.

Anyways. How many words and what words are your LOs saying so far. I am concerned my son isn't talking enough. My mother-in-law is constantly griping about how he should be talking more. He talks a little. He says "bye bye" and waves, he says "yum" "mama" "dada" "ball" "yeah" attempts to say "thank you" and he says "Go Go Go" when we go to leave or the cat in the hat song is on PBS. But thats really it. He will shake his head yes or no when I ask him a question. But he just doesn't seem to want to talk a whole lot.

He hit every other milestone very early. So I was never concerned about him being behind. He started walking at 7 months, and doing other things early. Its just my mother-in-law constantly asking why he isn't talking more is driving me insane. Now she has my husband worried that there is something wrong with our son. They are saying its my fault for "baby-talking" to him too much.

Even though I have 2 old children they we adopted them when they were 5 and 8 so we have never been through the baby/toddler stage.

So  what all are your little ones saying? Are they talking yet? and also do you "baby-talk" to your baby or do you talk to him more like he is a grown up.?

Re: Talking?

  • Oh my gosh I would not be concerned at all! Your LO is talking up a little storm. It sounds completely normal range of communication to me, even a little ahead of the game when I think of all the babies this age that I know. Don't worry! Are they expecting him to be coming up with full sentences at this point or what? Check any milestone chart and you'll see that your LO is doing just fine, and even if he was behind a couple of months it would not mean that there is something wrong with him.

And if your husband and MIL are talking to him as if there is something wrong with him, rather than encouraging his communication efforts, then I am sure that is doing more harm than your "baby talking." Babies can sense disappointment and tones of voices!

I talk to my little guy all the time, and I don't use baby talk. I explain what we are doing, sing to him, narrate my day, etc. I have been doing that since the beginning and at first it can feel weird but after a while you don't even think about it, you just blab away like a crazy person!

  • Do not pay attention to what anybody says, your DS is fine. Every kid goes at their own pace. DD doesnt say much at all. She just started saying mama, only says Da for dadda, says Dom(her brother's name) and says woof for dog. I am not worried one bit and ::Gasp:: she doesn't like walking much either! Baby talk really does do them more harm then good. I try not to talk that way but i have to admit i do. I'm not wacky about it but certain words I baby it up like, tubby for bathtub and snacky for snack. I try to catch myself though. Please don't let anyone make you worry.
  • Sorry, but your MIL is an asshat.  My kid walks around calling everything dadadadadada and making motorboat sounds all day long.  I would hate to see her diagnosing THIS situation. ;)

This made me LOL. Sounds like my kid!!

  • Your ILs need to STFU. My kid says Maman and Papa. I *think* I heard her sait "lait" (milk) the other day but I'm beginning to wonder if I didn't just dream it.

That's it. And I'm not worried.

On a side note, I think DD1 was well beyond 18 months when she started to "sing along" (and by that, I mean say "Go-go-go-go", not actually sing along) to the Cat in the Hat song. Your son is definitely NOT behind.

And on a different topic: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR BFP!

  • Last time I checked this was the August 2011 board, not the August 2010 board. This is where toddlers learn to say words, not hold a conversation.

I wouldnt be concerned what your MIL is saying. I feel sometimes the older generations forget what is normal for children at certain ages.

  • Huh, talking?  No talking.  Developing normally yes, smart yes, running dancing yes, smiling sharing yes, talking not so much.  She said "hi" a couple times a month or so ago because her older DC buddy was going crazy with the word, but hasn't said it since.  Sometimes she makes panting noises if she sees a furry animal (that's the sign for "dog", not "furry animal", but I'll take what I can get); she claps on occasion and waves even less.  She said "mama" a few times this past week but at random times, although I dutifully respond, or if she's with DH he'll say, "yes, Mama will be home soon".  So, yeah, we have two words, one sign, two gestures here.  She won't even sign milk and I've been signing that for over eight months!  They way I hear it, in the next six months or so she could "explode" with signs or words ... maybe not...  Wait, maybe she signed "all done" intentionally the other day... I wasn't sure...  GL!

  • I basically ignore my mother or really other family members when they start talking milestones.  Remember that parents conveniently forget when "real" words starting coming out and instead usually exaggerate the actual timeline by probably months.  There's no way that I did some of the milestones at the age that my mother insisted I did it!  Your son is doing great!  Just a side note if you're interested, DD says this and that, mama, dada, hi and bye bye (occasionally), ba ba (bottle), and will make a few animal sounds.  She loves her princesses and will say "cinsess" for them too.  Very cute!  Oh, and the doctor said she was very advanced verbally for saying these at 12 months (meanwhile I thought she was behind a little).  They said they only look for 1-2 words at 1 yr.

  • Wow!  Sounds like your little guy is pretty advanced as far as communication goes.  DD says mama, dada, dog, keekat or kitty (it's garbled, but I know what she means), and nighnight.  Just this week she started consistently saying "nana" - short for banana - to indicate that she is hungry in general.

I think you need to remind your MIL that communication is not all about saying actual words.  I think the fact that your DS will shake his head yes or no shows that he is understanding language/words, which is great!  Don't let her make you worry, sounds like he is perfectly fine.

  • I'm pretty sure your LO is perfectly fine!  DD2's only really clear word is "uh-oh," and she says, "dot" and "dat" for dog and cat.  She also clearly understands words, like, "sissy," "daddy," "mommy," "yucky," and "thank you."  Her pediatrician doesn't seem concerned at all, so I'm pretty positive your LO is fine.  =)

  • Talking? What's that?

DD will say "mama" when someone asks, "Can you say mama?" But other than that, we've got nothing over hear. Your LO sounds VERY NORMAL, and don't let your inlaws tell you otherwise!
