Hi there anyone have a infant dx with SPD that was sooo difficult since birth? Pretty sure my son has SPD we are in process of eval but I can barely function to take care of him as he only sleeps on my and wakes instantly when I put him in side car crib most times. He is 20 lbs and too big to lay on my chest now and my whole body hurts. He needs constant movement and entertainment as he can't crawl yet. He only falls asleep nursing or in ergo but I can't do this much longer my health is failing. Anyone else have a baby like this? Did OT help with sleep? My son also won't eat solids or take a bottle only nurse so only I can care for him. I am do stressed:
Re: Help SPD and no sleep infant
How old is your son?
My older two both have lots of sensory issues that looking back, were present from the moment they entered the world.
I'm pretty sure DS has sensory issues from birth. He was a horrible sleeper and did not sleep through the night until he was over a year old. It was horrible. I had to be holding him or carrying him in a sling/carrier at all times. We didn't start OT until he was 2, so I can't say if they would have done anything for sleep.
Is he rolling yet? We found that a tight swaddle helped because it gave him sensory input. Other than that, my husband and I would do a divided shift -- I would go to bed early and get up with the baby starting at 2, which he covered the late evening hours.
Peyton is almost 3 and still doesn't STTN. Or by herself.
Auntie, I had to laugh at the 'crabby little SOB" lol. Peyton could stay awake ALL night when she was little.
She is pretty good about going to sleep with us, and so we have not fought that yet. I can get up after she goes to sleep and go about my business. M on the other hand, started STTN at about 16 months, and now that she doesn't puke when she cries we let her cry it out sometimes. I know she's capable of sleep now so she's lost that approach.
P would only sleep in the car, swing or on me.
OP-I'm sorry, I remember those nights..sometimes you just have to do what works at that moment, have you tried a swing all night?
My son (with the ASD diagnosis) was super easy and was (still is) a great sleeper. He went with the flow, took a bottle, was pretty much a dream baby. My DD (now 15 months) is the complete opposite...she rocked our world. Sleeping was a fight, eating from a bottle a fight, switching to formula...a fight. I know some of these things might not apply, but I just want to throw them out there in case they might help.
I tried a million different bottles with her, different nipples, different feeding positions, etc...what finally worked was warming the milk up to a really warm temp. I still have to give her warm milk. Are you opposed to switching to formula? That would give you a break and maybe even fill him up so much that he sleeps better. Is it possible he is refluxing? Reflux meds also helped us out. Will he take a pacifier if he's drowsy in place of nursing?
Have you tried putting him to sleep in his crib, maybe trying the Ferber method? I know it's so hard with a difficult infant and it definitely wears you down. Please find someone to give you a break just so you can get a breather...even if he cries, you know that someone will be there to comfort him and you can do whatever you need to do to refresh. Hang in there, it will get better at some point.
