NAR- anyone had a root canal?

Went to the dentist today (boy do I HATE the dentist) and I need a root canal.  :-(  We don't have dental coverage on our medical insurance so it is going to be $$.  $600 for the root canal and $800 for the crown.  Apparently I can skip the crown but my tooth will be weaker and risk breaking.

Anyone get a root canal and skip the crown?

  • Lurking...

Yes, I currently need several teeth pulled because I tried this... save up the money and get it taken care of...

  • I've had a root canal but am waiting until the new year (I had two root canals this year!) to get my crown done bc our insurance was maxed. The dentist told me I need to get it done within a year.

    Come home, baby A!
  • I've had more root canals then I care to admit.

Save the money, and get the crown.  I had a temp crown break once while I was waiting on the Perm Crown- and it was AWEFUL.  They literally grind your tooth down to a nub, and it's SO brittle!

  • Thanks ladies.  I think I'll get the root canal asap and save for the crown.  Such a boring thing to spend money on, but sounds like it should be done.  Ugh.

  • I had a root canal and saved up for the crown, my dentist advised getting it done within a year which I did.  10 years later the tooth under the crown actually deteriorated to the point where I had to have it removed and get an implant - $3,000 not covered by insurance.  I highly recommend getting the root canal and the crown as soon as possible.

I hate the dentist, I actually just moved my cleaning from yesterday to a few weeks from now just because I was making myself sick with nerves - for just a cleaning!  Good luck, and I'm sorry you have to go through this, not fun at all!

  • Two root canals, two crowns right here.  When I have problems with my teeth or even just a chip, I'm miserable.  The crown is worth it just so you don't have that sharp, jagged nub in your mouth.  If you try to go without it, I don't think it will take you long to change your mind.  Luckily, my old, grampa-esk dentist never even gave me a choice!
  • I agree with everyone who said to get the crowns.  I have had 3 root canals done and 3 crowns.

  • I had a root canal and crown done- within a year they told me the tooth underneath had still gone bad and I needed to get an implant. All in all it was like 3500 when I was done as we didn't have dental insurance. Honestly, if it's not in the front - I would just have it pulled. Crowns only last so long anyways and eventually it'll need to be pulled as root canals essentially kill the tooths' root. Sorry- I just want to save you a lot of time/money if possible.
