Anyone have brown spotting that turned out to be nothing?

Hi All,

I'm about 4 1/2 weeks pregnant, and I had some very light brown spotting (more like brown discharge).  Went to the doc and they checked my blood, going in again tomorrow. I know this can sometimes be a bad sign, so I'm looking for a little encouragement in the meantime!

Thanks!

  • I think as long as theres no cramps or red flow that actually like a flow this can be normal. Did you have sex around the time of the spotting? That could maybe do it too. Brown blood is just old blood, I wouldn't worry too much right now. My doctor won't even take me in unless its flow and cramps.

  • brown spotting is very normal.  I spotted from the week of my missed period up until about 8 weeks...I even bled red a few times and cramped the whole time.  USs showed a very healthy baby.

You are so early so it is probably implantation bleeding.

  • I had spotting with my first pregnancy and was told that can be normal.  Brown is old blood and the spotting can sometimes happen after sex or after an exam.  (although I don't think I'd had either right before mine)

I think it's good that you checked with the doctor.  Take it easy just in case, but don't worry as it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong.

  • I had this over the weekend and the doctor said as long as it isn't bright red and I'm not cramping badly, that it isn't anything to worry about. I am going in today for a follow up just to make sure everything is okay though.

  • I had brown spotting with my first along with what felt like period cramps I even remember having a small amount of bright red blood. I have a healthy girl.

In May I got pg I had some spotting but nothing I was in the slightest bit worried about. I miscarried.

This pg again some spotting and even some bright red blood everything appears to be fine on u/s and have heard babys hb many times via doppler!

I large % women due bleed and have healthy babies! obviously none of us can say for certain but try not to worry. We all know it's so hard...

  • I have brown spotting right now. My mom said that she spotted with all of her kids (me+4siblings) and actually the pregnancies that she didn't spot with are the ones that she miscarried.

I think the big thing is that no 2 pregnancies are the same. Good luck. I know that it's stressful. I was freaking out this morning too!

  • I found out that I was pregnant at 5 weeks and a couple days later I started having brown spotting/discharge. The doctor said its perfectly fine. I had cramping too and everything is fine with my baby :)
  • I had brown spotting, and then 2 small clots that were bright red which caused me to freak as I miscarried 2 months earlier and was worried I was headed there again.

Turned out it was implantation bleeding and now I'm 4 weeks in with good HCG levels and very positive HPTs.

With my miscarriage there was new (red) blood so as long as it is brown, it's a good sign.

A small amount of bleeding can be normal. I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry unless it begins to flow or you are cramping badly.

  • I had it yesterday morning and agin just now. Its slight brown discharge. My doc said this is quite normal among women, I am 6 weeks along and he also said it can be the placenta attaching to the uterus. Whatever it may be, we cant worry too much (as I did ) because like my doc said, there is nothing we can do to prevent a miscarriage this early on if it is going to happen. So try to relax, stress is no good for us right now.

If it gets worse, bright red and cramping, do call your doc right away.

Best of luck to you Smile

  • I am on day three of some brown spotting. It's lighter than Sunday though. Yesterday I went in because I was freaking out, due to two back to back losses prior to this pregnancy. And there was my little fetal pole, looking just fine! So, I am very early obviously but so far I am looking to it as a success story! Big hugs to you as you go through this time. I know how scary it can be.

  • I never had any spotting with my first LO but with my 2nd I had spotting at 4,8, and 12 weeks. My OB said its super common....especially around the time you would have gotten your period. I had some spotting at 8 weeks with this LO but everything checked out at my last appointment.

Get some rest and take care of yourself. All the best!

  • Unfortunately, brown spotting can go either way.  I had 3 miscarriages, all started with brown/pinkish spotting that later turned to bright red a few days later.  I had brown spotting off and on with this pregnancy too but I'm 11 weeks along and everything looks great this time.

As others have said, no two pregnancies are the same, even my miscarriages were slightly different from when the brown spotting started to how long it took for the red & cramping to come.  All you can try to do is stay calm (yeah right).  hoping for the best for you.

  • I had some brown spotting once, the day after we had sex. It was nothing, I'm now almost 13 weeks and baby is big and healthy!
