First food moments

I'd like to share my experience, then everyone can add theirs, if you have one yet. :)

DD had another growth spurt, and is now greatly surpassing the amount of milk I can make. Since she is going to food soon anyway, I didn't want to introduce formula this late in the game. I called the doc, and he said it was fine. We have an appt in 2 weeks anyway. I chose rice cereal because we are starting so young, her belly might not be totally ready for it yet.

...but her mouth is!!!

I mixed up a tsp of cereal like the pedi said 1tsp cereal and 1tsp bm. I figured it would be way too thick for her, but figured I'd try it anyway. Ya know, gotta start somewhere. It was like regular baby food. I put a little bit on the roof of her mouth, and it didn't come back out. I tried a little more, and again, it's not coming out... Then I notice she is gumming it around in there, kind of playing with it. She eventually swallowed, and the rest is history. She didn't gag or anything, she just got really wiggly and excited. I fed her the rest of the cereal, and gave her a sip of a bottle to make sure it all went down.

So that's the beginning of our adventure. Share your story!

  • I wasn't going to start so soon, but pedi thought we should. DS1 has major food allergies. There is some research that suggests starting foods early may decrease your chance of allergies. That chance was enough to push me to start early. We started with rice cereal, but he really didn't like it. after a week we tried avocado. He liked it, but was still unsure. Then came the sweet potatoes. He loves them!!! Can't get enough!

  • We're feeding rice cereal 1x a day and a veggie 1x a day (so far we've only done peas, but I'm going to start sweet potato this weekend).  They LOVE to eat.  My son figured it out very fast and now his little mouth flies open as soon as the spoon leaves the bowl.  My daughter likes it once she figures it out, but as with most things, she is a little suspicious in the beginning.  I just love watching them try new things.  :)

  • we started right at 4 months with avocados, two weeks later (this past week) we did sweet potatoes... he caught on right away what to do, and now when the spoon goes towards his mouth, he opens wide lol

Here is a pic from the first night of sweet potatoes... licking the spoon clean lol

    LOL that pic is adorable!

  • We saw the dietician this morning, and she wants us to hold off until 6 months especially because of LO's size.  Which I'm more than okay with.  Even though some babies seem more ready by this point, DD definitely isn't.  She's not showing any signs of interest in food yet.  (Plus I cloth diaper, and it's good to just be able to throw the diapers in the washer... I'll have to spray when she starts solids!)

ETA:  I am looking forward to watching her expression when she tries new foods though!  It must be so much fun!

  • Joshandpanda so cute!

Ds is still under the 4 month mark and I'd like to ebf until 6 months. That said, ds has been SUPER interested in any food that goes in my mouth. So I've been letting him lick and gum my healthier snacks like oranges and mango slices. He gets the funniest looks on his face then gets squeaky for more!
Nevermind me, I'm too distracted by my mini-carrots to think properly image

  • For avas 4mo birthday she got her first sippy cup with water in it and we gave her a few bites of the oatmeal cereal. She loved it. Cant wait till her appt and we get cleared by the dr to go ahead and feed more.we put it on video.imissed recording her first roll. I definatly wasnt going to miss her first bite of food.
  • I am on week two of solids and my LO LOVES it!  If everything went according to plan, I wanted to do baby led weaning starting at 6 months, but because BF didnt work out, we started purees at 4 1/2 months once a day.  So far, just sweet potatoes and bananas.  I think I'm going to do avacado next.  Our pedi advised starting with veggies, fruits and even meats before cereal.  The first time we spooned some sweet potatoes in her mouth she was surprised, but has been wanting to feed herself since (and make a mess).  It is so fun watching her experience new things!  I can't want to start giving her finger food, I think she will really enjoy this.

I cloth diaper too, and I think it has gotten better with solids!  Hopefully this isnt TMI, but much more ploppable.
