Working Moms

if you stopped pumping but still nurse

DD is almost 11 months and I'm not getting as much milk as I used to.  I'm coming up 3-5 oz short everyday.  So far I've been ok either pulling from my stash or pumping evenings/weekends.  But she still is EBF when we're together, and I don't want to give that up just b/c I can't pump enough.

So how did you make the transition from pumping to not and still able to nurse?  I think DD will want to keep nursing overnight, in the morning and at bedtime.  I want to maintain some supply still.  Any advice?

Re: if you stopped pumping but still nurse

  • I stopped pumping just before he was a year, and continued to nurse for about 2 months. We nursed only in the morning and right before bed, and I was able to keep up with those 2 sessions. I only weaned out of choice, and not because of any issues I was having. A lot of women continue to nurse just 2 or 3 times and can maintain it for a long time.

  • Just stop pumping. If you keep nursing in the morning and at night, you will have a supply then. I quit pumping at 12 months, LO is 15 months now and he still nurses twice a day on weekdays, and 3 times on weekends.

  • I stopped pumping when LO was 10 month and just did morning feeding and before bed. I was able to do that for about a month and a half before my supply started to dip, then I just did the mornings. I did that for about a week or two and LO wasn't getting enough so I weaned completely. I think doing it that way really made weaning an easy transition for both of us.
  • I stopped pumping at 11 months.  I used the rest of my freezer stash for the last month and then we switched to whole milk during the day when DD turned 1.  I continued to nurse DD before she went to bed, but at that point, it was more of a comfort thing.  She self-weaned at 14 months.
  • Some moms just stop pumping all at once, I had to gradually reduce it or I got engorged.  I started moving my pump session later in the day and pumping less at that time, until I was comfortable giving it up.  I also found that if I nursed during the day on the weekend, I got engorged during the week.  So I had to cut down to just nursing morning and bedtime on the weekends too.

  • I just weaned off the pump and kept nursing while we were together. With both girls, I was done pumping by 12 months. DD1 nursed to just over 3 years. DD2 is still nursing 2x a day at 26 months.

  • I had a big drop at 11 mos; I continued pumping 2-3x at work (for 2 oz all day, ugh) and at my bedtime (< 1 oz) and supplemented with formula until 12 mos.  Then I stopped the daytime pumping and pumped only at my bedtime for ... a few days on and off.  We transitioned LO to WCM and at some point I stopped pumping.  At 14 mos, LO probably isn't getting more than 4 oz BM a day, but she keeps coming back for more.  GL!
