Crying while Nursing (also posted in 3-6 months)

My LO has started crying sometimes when he nurses. He pulls back and cries/screams loudly. He's usually fine at the beginning, but then starts crying. He'll be fine when I sit him up or switch sides (at least for a little bit, then he'll cry again).

I thought maybe he wasn't getting milk and was getting frustrated, but when I squeeze, milk will come out. It will even shoot out, so I think there's plenty there. We stopped using a nipple shield a few weeks ago.

He's been fussier than usual and not sleeping as well either. It's been going on for about a week. Any ideas? Reflux? Because we changed from the nipple shield? Random wonder week? Random baby fussiness? Something else?

I keep thinking it will pass, but feeding times are starting to get really stressful. I can't decide if I should take him to the doctor or just wait it out. He doesn't do it every feeding, and like I said, it just started about a week ago.

Thanks!

  • Coming out of lurker status for a sec. My DD would do this as well when we first stopped using the nipple shield. It was so frustrating! She still does it sometimes. It sounds like you have a forceful letdown and that the milk is coming out faster than LO likes. The nipple shield made it not noticeable. Try nursing in the side lying position and see if you notice an improvement. Eventually my LO either got used to the faster flow or was able to better control it. Now I only have to nurse while laying down when she's really tired.

  • You're welcome. I hope it fixes the issue.

  • My LO is a super fussy eater in general. For a period he used to cry during nursing too and I do did have a forceful letdown. He eventually got better at handling the flow. But I know how you feel. I never wanted to nurse in public because of his behavior and not to mention the mess that comes with the forceful letdown! But I remember how stressful feeding times were for me and LO and always wondered why such a basic thing as feeding can be so stressful.
  • I have found that with my son, this sometimes means that he has a stomach ache/ or is gassy.  I have started burping him more and this does not happen as often.
  • My DS does that too and I realise the fussiness always starts during milk letdowns. I searched on the web and they suggested nursing in a reclined position and it does helped. I can totally understand how you feel I almost had the urge to give up breastfeeding as the crying and choking has made him swallowed so much air making him gassy.
