Mold in the house, what do I do?????

We have an extra bedroom in our house that does not get used except for storage.  I have been planning on turning it into a playroom for the girls, but just have not had a chance to work on it.  We always keep the door closed and only go in there to throw stuff we don't have room for anywhere else.  We had a recliner in there and I went in there today and the chair had mold ALL OVER IT!!!!  I had DH take it outside so we could get rid of it.  I went into the room and started going through what we have in there and almost everything had mold on it.  I started putting everything in trash bags to throw away.  We were planning on ripping up the carpet and putting down wood floors anyway.  I went out today and got some damp rid so that we can try and avoid new mold.  I am trying to figure out what to do to make sure that we get it all cleaned.  Naturally I am freaking out because I don't want the girls breathing that in and I have asthma so it's really not good for me either.  DH is treating it like it's no big deal, which is really frustrating to me.  He tells me that he grew up with mold in his house and he is fine.  I only started noticing a moldy smell in the last couple months and did not see the mold until today.  Should I hire someone professional to clean the room??  I would like to do that so I know it's done right, but i'm sure it's going to be very expensive.  Has anyone else had to deal with this issue??

Re: Mold in the house, what do I do?????

  • My sister has mold and her girls have chronic respiratory problems. Could be related. Could not.

Where is the humidity coming from in that room that everything you've put in is moldy? I think that's the first thing you need to figure out. Even if you get it cleaned, if you don't figure out the source, it will continue to grow. Do you have mold anywhere else in the house?

If you have mold growing on everything in that room, I would be concerned because it's obviously not a contained spot on a wall or floor or anything. An option would be to have an environmental company come in and do an assessment to see where you actually stand and figure out any other problem areas. They can also let you know how bad the problem is. However, the amount you described sounds like it could require a professional to come in and remove it.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

  • Look into something called an ozone generator. You can either buy them or hire someone in your area to do this for you. It can kill mold and get rid of it. It won't get rid of the physical appearance..that you have to remove on your own usually but it gets rid of all the nasty spores. My husband owns his own little ozone company and people have given him great reviews. Also we use it in our home and homes that we bought and renovated and it works great. To top it off it will get rid of smells.

  • I would find some sort of a professional fix, my aunt had mold in her house and she fought it herself for years without lasting success.

  • The house we live in is the house that I grew up in so I know there has never been a mold problem in the last 25 years besides in the bathroom, which was taken care of by a professional company years ago and we have not seen any problems.  The bedroom where there is mold now is across the hall and up until about 6 months ago my brother lived in the room.  As far as I can tell there is some mold on the wall, but it is where the bedding that had mold on it was touching the wall.  I do not see any on the carpet but I am going to replace it anyway.  I am having someone come this week to do an assessment to see if the mold is anywhere else besides where I can see.  Thanks for your input ladies.  I was freaking out yesterday.

  • First things first, you need to determine where the moisture is coming from that the mold is feeding off of along with if it's in the walls depending on what type of walls you've got..  What is above/around the area???   Is there a drainage issue from the outside?  Yes, rip the carpet up and get it out of there as that might give you a directional clue if the carpet is moldy as well.  If the mold is a continuing problem, fix the water source problem, then go with tile and rugs on the floor instead of hardwood.  Worst comes to worse, if it's in the walls you might need to replace your drywall...  It is worth having the pros come in if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself..

  • I agree with this person.. I use to do mold jobs and you need to fix what's causing the mold.

For the mold you have a really cheap solution is to spray Clorox on the mold and use a large brush to clean it.
