My parents bought DS a Nemo costume because they know how much he likes Nemo and fish. I showed it to him a few times and I tried to get it on him once. It was a fail because he threw a fit. I am not requiring the hat piece because I know he hates things on his head but I feel bad for them to spend money on the costume when DS would not even try it on.
I felt it and it was kind of itchy but I was planning to put it over his clothes. Maybe I could wash it to make it softer.
His hamburger costume I bought from Old Navy last year could fit him one more time.
I just want him to have a nice Halloween.
Do you girls have any advice? TIA
Re: Halloween Costume Trouble
My DS hasn't been too crazy about his costumes, but has tolerated because I told him that if he wants to get candy, he's got to wear the costume. He was mainly upset over the headpiece (Old Navy Monkey costume one year, and a plush alligator last year). Because it was plush- and because I live in the Midwest where it is usually freezing on Halloween- I told him we were just "putting his hat on" and he knows that we wear hats in the cold weather and that it's a rule. Now this year I personally would like him to dress up in this awesome Batman costume I found on clearance- but I highly doubt the face mask is going to go over well, so I'm not holding my breath. DS keeps saying he wants to be a "Fire Monster" whatever that is. ("He's got fire on him!")
Any chance you can put him in a sweatsuit and put Nemo on over his clothing?
He's been excited for this Halloween since last Halloween and gets the candy concept so I'm not anticipating any issues. Still I've been letting DS use his astronaut costume as dress up. And I'm going to have a simple ghost costume/sheet as a back up.

Chris wore a Captain Kirk "costume" when he was one. I put it in quotes because it was really just a cute Star Trek dark yellow (with Starfleet insignia) onesie I found. So I put it on him with black pants, black socks and black shoes - instant Captain Kirk. Since then, he hasn't really done costumes. I don't think they'd go over all that well with him since he hates hats, backpacks, etc.
I understand you not wanting them to feel bad but at the end of the day, if it's going to cause more harm than good, I don't know. I wouldn't do it. I'd go for maybe a costume that is more like clothes so he's still participating in the holiday - just more comfortably. I was like that as a kid and my mom used to dress me up like a little doll - she'd just paint freckles and big red "blush" on my cheeks- a cowgirl (jeans, plaid shirt, vest and a hat) because I didn't like plastic face masks or anything I had to put on over my clothes.
No idea what Chris is going to do this Halloween. I know what I'd like him to wear but I'll need to run it by the school - I found a pair of pants and tee-shirt that have a skeleton motif so he'll look like a little skeleton (it also helps that he's skinny), but I don't know if some of the other kids would find it too scary.
Good luck!
