Re: Waiting to adopt check-in 10/01

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages? International / Russia / 2 yo boy

    2) In what phase of the process are you?  We leave in one week for our court trip!  Ah!

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? Just that we are leaving soon and working on getting packed and prepped for court.

    4) How are you feeling this week? Two words: nervous wreck. I cannot wait until this trip is behind us and I can breathe again.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid? I think a two-year-old can enjoy Halloween.  I might take a one year old to a few houses (family/friends) but two is when the fun really starts in my mind b/c I think they can "get it" more at that age.  I love the dressing up and candy part of Halloween but I don't like the death and evil aspect.  My parents kind of just taught us to enjoy the good and ignore the bad.  We were encouraged to pick fun costumes over gruesome ones, which is probably what I will do for our family too.

Also when I was a kid I ate my entire candy stash in 4 days, every year.  Some of my friends were only allowed one or two pieces per day.  Where's the fun in that??  I'll probably let my kids get sick on candy for a week too because that was my favorite part. Ha!

    Domestic infant adoption

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

    Home study

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

Two big ones!  We finished our training, and MH accepted a fantastic new job with adoption assistance.  Big Smile  I also took a new job that will help us save.

    4) How are you feeling this week?

Excited and rarin' to get going with our home study.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

I have no idea how old!  I'm sure I'll get a costume the very first year, just to show off to friends/family.  I enjoy Halloween but am not a huge fan.  I like to take my nieces trick or treating.

When I was little, my mom used to make all of our costumes, anything we wanted.  She's amazing.  We'd go to sleep on October 30 and wake up to a gorgeous costume -- once I was a TV set.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages? Foster to adopt, ages 2 months to 9 years old 2) In what phase of the process are you?  STILL waiting for my first placement. 3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?I got my respite pay deposited into my account today from taking care of the boys a few weeks ago. That's an accomplishment to me because at least I know I'm still a foster parent with my agency, lol. I  still feel a little forgotten about though. 4) How are you feeling this week?I've found out about more and more friends/acquaintances being pregnant and I get a little jealous that it was super easy for them to get pregnant.  And the more I wait for a placement the more I feel like it'll never happen. But I'm hanging in there and just trying to enjoy life more then I have in the last two years with trying to get pregnant.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

I have no idea! But I do love giving out candy. I teach at the same elementary school I went to as a child and my parents still live in the same neighborhood. My mom and I give out candy and I get to see a lot of my students. They get a free 100 if they come by my parents' house! As a child, we always went trick-or-treating and then went home and finished giving out candy. I was in drill team, so my mom made me wear my uniforms as my costumes, lol.

    International * DRC * 0-2years

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

    home study

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

We've just been collecting all the documents we need.  We are getting close to turning in our big binder!

    4) How are you feeling this week?

We are getting ready to leave for vacation, so I'm excited and also just running around like crazy making sure we have everything!

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

DD1's birthday is close to Halloween, so we have a costume party for her birthday each year.  Costumes are required, which means the grandparents and other reluctant participants must scramble and find something :)   So, we love Halloween!  Last year we did trick-or-treating just in our small neighborhood, and we'll continue that tradition.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages?

    IA, Uganda, younger than DS.

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

Waiting for our checks to clear to be put on the wait list. Today? Tomorrow?

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

See above. I JUST WANT OUR NUMBER.

    4) How are you feeling this week?

Good, actually. I feel like I've been stressing out for two months just willing our 171 to come, and now we get to kind of kick back and not think about it a bit.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

Well I'm not sure. DH and I are in college ministry, so we usually do something with the students (the last few years we've been going to nursing homes and visiting/passing out candy). DS was a penguin last year. I really need to get my butt in gear; I still have no idea what to dress him up as! I'm thinking a monkey bc he climbs ev-er-y-thing, but I'm not positive I can execute a monkey costume. I love being able to take him with us (and usually the old folks love to see him), but I'm sure we can't do that forever.

    Domestic infant

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

    Waiting for a match

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

    Nope!

    4) How are you feeling this week?

Wondering if this is ever going to happen

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

I think we'll probably go to close neighbor's houses when little one is 2 or 3. We'll probably wait until 4 or 5 to cover more ground.

Halloween is my DH's favorite holiday! He really gets into it with decorating the house, dressing up, etc. He's so silly.

I was like a PP. I ate all my Halloween candy in the few days after Halloween! I have a serious sweet tooth. I think I'll let my kid do that too for the most part, although I may limit the amount a little bit!

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages? Domestic Infant Adoption

    2) In what phase of the process are you?  Home with our little angel!  2 more days until the BM can no longer change her mind.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? Bringing home DD!

    4) How are you feeling this week? Wonderful!  A little tired, but sooo happy!

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?  I really enjoyed Halloween as a kid, but I'm not sure when I will start taking my kids out.  My MIL bought a lady bug costume for DD already, though she'll only be a month old when Halloween rolls around.

This is a place for anyone in the waiting-to-adopt phase to check in.  Lurkers welcome! Whether you're still checking out different agencies and programs or you're bringing your child home tomorrow, this is for you!

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages?  Adoption from foster care, 0-3

    2) In what phase of the process are you?  Beginning, nothing official yet

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? None this week

    4) How are you feeling this week? A little sad, DH doesn't think we should move up our adoption timeline.  I'm ready to get started now since it takes so darn long to get approved.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid? I'm not sure, my DS is 15 months old and I really want to get him a costume but I don't want to trick-or-treat since he can't eat candy.  I was thinking of just taking him on a walk around the neighborhood but that might be weird.  I LOVE Halloween it is my favorite holiday!  As a kid we always went trick-or-treating and when I was older I loved handing out candy to the kids.  I still do, someday when we have more money I want to be that house that hands out the full-size candy bars that everyone wants to come to!

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages?

    domestic through an agency

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

Last home study visit is last week, then we'll be actively waiting

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

This weekend we mailed in our life book and e-mailed our birth mother letter (which our SW said was "outstanding" :-). I'm so happy to have finished everything that is in our power to control. I am looking forward to things being out of our hands.

    4) How are you feeling this week?

    Excited and hopeful.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

I'll probably dress them up in a cute costume and take them to visit family/friends, but we won't go door-to-door for several years. Not sure how old is appropriate, though. I like candy and cute costumes, but I'm not much for decorating or going all out. My parents made me ration my candy, and my brother and I would split ours up so we got a little bit of everything.

  • 1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages?

We haven't decided. DH would like to adopt a newborn.

    2) In what phase of the process are you?

    Still researching.

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate?

Nothing to celebrate. Tomorrow we are going to the county's foster system information session. We've just reached out to friends of friends who adopted through the foster system.

    4) How are you feeling this week?

    Uncertain.

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid?

Hmm. I have no idea. We live in an area without trick-or-treating and the children of our friends are all under 3 and our friends say the kids don't really get it yet.

We had a neighborhood feel growing up where everyone would ooh and awe over our known neighbors' costumes. I can't see that ever being the same in our neighborhood. The houses are just too spread out and the windy road too dangerous for trick-or-treating.

    1) What kind of adoption/fostering are you doing? Ages? Hoping to adopt two sibs under 5 from foster care

    2) In what phase of the process are you?  Approved and waiting.  We have 2 possibilities, but the SW hasn't made a decision yet

    3) Any recent accomplishments or milestones to celebrate? friends from our adoption class are matched and have a visitations schedule and placement date!!

    4) How are you feeling this week?A little discouraged

    5) QOTW: How old are/will your kids be (or how old do you think kids should be) the first time they go trick-or-treating? Do you like Halloween?  What was Halloween like when you were a kid? I loved Halloween as a kid.  I don't think we will have kids by Halloween though.  I think even babies can go trick or treating to just a few houses, even if it is just to show off the costumes.
