Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Naps and day schedule for 7wk old

My baby has been extremely cranky as of late. Not willing yet to throw my hands up and say I have a colicy baby, I've thought of the following:

She usually would take little cat naps during the day, and was cranky inbetween. My thought is that maybe she's ready to have the schedule of two naps a day and perhaps she isn't colicy, but just very overtired.

When did you start your babies on nap schedules, or just making sure they got in larger naps? What kind of day schedules work for babies nearing 2 months? (I'm an only child and never was around babies, so as a FTM I have to admit I'm clueless)

Re: Naps and day schedule for 7wk old

  • Well "they" say the first schedule a LO will have is three naps a day around three months (an early morning, early afternoon and early evening).  DS1 sucked at napping and loved to wake up after 45 minutes no matter what I did.  I got so excited at the prospect of three beautiful naps by three months that I was devasted when that didn't happen.  My advice is to just go with it.  I think DS1 and I would have been much happier if I didn't spend so much time worrying about him napping more than 45 minutes at a time.  It was horrible, but by 8-9 months he was doing two naps a day and by 14 months he started taking at least one 1.5 hour nap.

  • So, say my LO today has been napping since about 2pm and it is 6pm now. She woke up 2x for a change and feeding. I have let her do this because 1- I feel like she hasn't slept well for at least a day and has been overtired and 2- she's just too darn sweet right now (was sleeping in swing/bounce seat but after last feeding been holding her... typing one-handed. In your experience should I wake her because she's been resting too long in fear she won't sleep tonight? I've heard of people doing this, but I feel like maybe she's sleeping for a reason and I'll only piss her off and make her fussy and upset all over again.
  • After reading all of the posts about napping and sleep schedules, I always think that my LO must be the exception because he sleeps most of the time.  He usually is awake for only an hour or so before he is ready to go back to sleep.  He usually won't fall asleep on his own, so I'll just hold and rock him until he does fall asleep.  If he doesn't sleep long enough, he gets crabby.  Now that he is coming to work with me, I've noticed that he wants to catnap because he is too interested in what is going on around him.  Therefore, I try to keep the lights in my office turned off when he is napping.  If he continues to keep waking up, I put him in my Ergo.  That normally solves the problem.

  • I noticed a more predictable schedule around 5 weeks. She goes down for a long nap in the morning, within 2 hours of waking. Catnaps throughout the day, then takes another long nap around 4 or 5 in the afternoon. Then goes down for bed around 9.

  • I started my son on a schedule the day we got home from the hospital. When he regulated himself it was a mess! I did let him direct teh schedule and spent a few weeks experimenting with what worked best. He never took three naps. He went straight to two naps a day (his doing not mine). He goes down about two hours after his first morning feeding and sleeps for 3 hours or more. Then he goes back to sleep sometime between 1 and 3 (depending on his morning) and sleeps until 5 or 6. He sleeps great at night (2 five hour stretches with a feeding in between). I don't think there is such a thing as a baby sleeping too much - it is what they do. Its important to make sure he is eating enough but other than let, if they are tired, it could be for any number of reasons. I let mine sleep - you never know when that might happen again.
