Cloth Diapering?

Is anyone considering cloth diapers? What are your thoughts?

I hear it saves about 1000 a year compared to disposable diapers. Also i hear that kids are potty trained between 18-24 mo for cloth diapers vs 3-4 years for disposable. I am thinking I should try it, but was hoping for some feedback :).

Here is one pro and con list: https://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/addressing-the-great-diaper-dilemma.html

Re: Cloth Diapering?

  • I'm totally thinking of trying it.  My friend did it and loved it. She had a service that delivered and picked up.

  • I CD part-time and love it.  Even DH notices how much more slowly the garbage can fills up and he's a total skeptic.

Check out the Cloth Diapering board here on TB.  Those ladies are all sorts of helpful.  There's also a Cloth Diaper Swap group on FB.  Another great website is diaperswappers.com

  • I already have a little stash of them. I got a variety of different brands, all in one size so I can use them from 8lbs-35lbs(I think). Surprisingly DH was totally on board and is thrilled to be saving money ;) I got almost all pocket diapers so I can put extra inserts in when needed. I have heard that the fitted ones with covers work best for overnight. It'll be trial and error finding the ones I like and what works best for LO.

  • We have been CDing our DS since he came home from the hospital and will definitely be CDing this baby. I really think once you get the hang of your wash routine, it's a piece of cake and totally worth all the benefits. Plus, they're super cute! (Although beware, it's easy to negate cost savings by getting addicted to buying cute diapers :-P )

  • I'm definitely all on board to try this.  It's wonderfully cost effective (especially if you're planning on more than one child) and cute!  I'm pretty sure DH can be convinced of it too - so hopefully we'll be a CD family!

  • We do both and it's been great! I love the CDs but overnight I find it easier for us to use disposables and frankly there are some days I don't want to hassle with them, so it's good for our family to do both! When she was ebf they were a lot easier to clean, but it's honest,y not that bad now.

I didn't cloth diaper and DD is potty trained already. She has been since 15 months. I have to take her to the potty because she's not good at getting her clothes off and back on by herself, but she tells me when she has to go. I've had no problem finding money for the diapers either. My SIL used cloth diapers, still is actually, and my niece just turned 2. She's only partially potty trained and part of the time. She probably spent the same amount of money on buying cloth diapers, as well as buying fabric and thread and liners to make them. She also has to wash her daughters laundry every day to ensure that she has enough diapers on hand the following day. I think it's a catch 22 personally. There are pros and cons to each. My SIL is a hippie, so I never expected her to use disposable. Everything in her home is organic or biodegradable. She chastises me for my parenting all the time, so maybe I'm not trustworthy advice? Hahaha! Personally, I think potty training has more to do with the parents than the kinds of diapers they put their children in. That being said, I love my SIL, even if she hates that I feed my DD meat and I use disposable diapers and don't co sleep or baby wear. However, I don't tell her she shouldn't parent the way she chooses. I think it's a personal decision for each set of parents. Edited to add a word

thank you for sharing another perspective :)

  • CD is something I really want to do, I've just started doing my research now, the CD board here is great as is Kelly's closet

Some people I tell think it's great, others roll their eyes but I'm excited for all the pro's it offers.

  • My biggest regret with DS is not CDing from the beginning. If I had know what I know now about CDs, I'd have been all over it. I'm now trying to convince DH to CD this one.

  • We have cloth diapered our son from the begining. I would never do anything different. He has been poop trained since around 11 months and is almost pee trained now. 22 months.

  • I seriously considered switching when DD was about 2 months, then I figured the start up cost on top of the whole coin operated machines we have in our complex wouldn't be worth it.

I'm considering it this time around though because I can gradually build up a really good stash, one that won't having be doing laundry 3 times a week, over the next 9 months.

jilliansdrawers.com has some good cloth diapering info, although it's a NY store but still good info and I think they ship and so does diaperjunction.com

  • We use cloth and love it for a variety of reasons.  They're SO much cuter than disposables, and, even as a working mom, keeping up with the wash routine is not that big a deal.

I'm not sure about the whole potty training thing.  DD is 19 months, and she has zero interest in using the toilet (though she does like to barge into the bathroom, point at me and say "pee" when I go, haha).  That's fine with me, though, I'd rather do it on her timetable.  It had nothing to do with our choice to CD.

  • I am thinking of using a diaper service until the baby is out of the newborn phase to save money on buying multiple sizes, and because it will be a nice treat with a new born :). I am sure I will have disposables on hand though for long trips.

  • We will be cloth diapering this time around. We used disposables with DS but when we started talking about getting PG again and I did some research we  (I) decided to use cloth. DH is not 100% on board but since I do about 99% of the diaper  changes it gets to be my choice.

Plus they are just so darn cute! I have about 15 AI2 in my stash all ready. I plan on picking up 10-15 more AI2 and some prefolds and covers for the newborn stage.

  • I'm definitely planning to do cloth diapers.  In addition to the savings, I've also heard it cuts way down on diaper rash.  And I'm just not that comfortable creating such huge piles of trash.  Plus, cloth diapers are so much cuter!
