One hour and twenty five minutes

That is how long A fussed and cried (off and on) last night when I didn't nurse him. 2:45 am to 4:10 am. Weaning night feedings is harder than I thought! I am basically starting sleep training all over again. I didn't pick him up but sat by his crib (he is in the same room with us because we can't sell our apartment but that is another story) until he fell back to sleep. Sometimes I rubbed his back, sometimes I tried to ignore him. We need to get some sleep in this house. A year of no sleep is enough. DH is already saying he doesn't want to TTC in the spring because he needs more time to catch up on lost sleep. Come on A if you ever want a sibling you need to give up the boob and learn how to sleep!

Re: One hour and twenty five minutes

  • I weaned from night feedings two weeks ago. We had 3 really rough nights but by the end of last week he was STTN pretty well! And the few times he has woken up, I just go in there, say "it's still sleepy time, go back to sleep, I love you", pat his back, and leave. That's actually what I started doing the first night of weaning. Now he's to the point where he's like, oh, I guess it's not time to get up, and then he goes back to sleep. It's pretty nice! Good luck : )

  • I was planning on night weaning, but A just kinda...gave it up on her own. When I started putting her down drowsy but awake, she screamed herself to sleep for a few nights, but then slept until it was time to wake up.

(Knock on wood!) she's been sleeping for 11 hours/night for the last 3 weeks or so, and puts herself to sleep at 8:00 sharp!

    It's worth it. Trust me.

  • Good luck! I hope it goes better tonight.  Wait- I'm sure it will go better tonigh, then better tomorrow night, and so on.  Stay strong! Is there any way you and DH can camp out in the living room so A isn't distracted by you for a while?

  • Hang in there.  We are doing this too.  We're on night 5 and no feeding till 4:30 (I'm doing it by pushing the feeding later and cutting it short) and I hope in next 3 nights we'll be done. I took some time partly because she's got a cold right now.

For you ladies that had success already -- did you get any early wake ups? How did you handle the wake ups without feeding (I saw one reply of patting back etc). I have had mixed results -- I always wait 15mins to even go in as if longer than that I can tell she isn't going right back to sleep and may get worked up.

    Did your DHs help?

  • We started sleep training and night weaning at the same time, three nights ago.  We made a plan that any wake ups, my H would go into the room so DS wasn't tempted to nurse.  This has worked really well for us.  DS goes down super easy (after the first night of hell), but will only go down for H.  I think when I try, DS knows there is a chance for nursing. H lays him back down when he wakes, gives him his teddy bear, tells him it's time for bed, and hums a song until DS is down.  It usually takes about 90 seconds.  Good luck with night weaning...having Hs help is key!
