Piercings - possible TMI?

So I've been patiently waiting for someone to ask this question because I've been thinking about it since the day I we got out BFP. I'm a child of the late 90's and as such have a number of piercings in various locations. Specifically I'm thinking about my belly button and nipples - I have all of them done. When are folks removing them? Or are you keeping them in and getting spacers to hold them for post pregnancy? I chatted with my doctor and she's not horribly concerned about them but said if they start to hurt they need to go. I'm pretty ok with letting my belly button go as it feels really dated at this point but I would rather keep my nipples. I know its going to be a pain to take them out with each feeding while breastfeeding and I may give up then. But I don't know what to do in the mean time.

Re: Piercings - possible TMI?

  • My sister had her belly button pierced. It got to the point that the piercing stretched too much for the bar she had so she gave it up and just repierced it like a year later. I'm pretty sure she had a scar though :/

The nipples would get really trying with feedings because I'm sure you'd have to take out the jewelry, clean them and then feed. I can tell you, with my first pregnancy my nipples literally bled because my babies latch did a number on me. So just be prepared because you may scab or something causing more pain than you anticipated. Then again, I bet piercing them wasn't a cake walk either!

  • I have had my belly button pierced for 10 years now, and I only keep it in because I feel like my stomach looks weird without it.  I plan on keeping it in as long as I can.

  • I'm not much help with the nipple piercings, but I did have my belly button pierced when I was 17 and took it when I was about 22 just because I felt like it didn't really suit me anymore and it kept getting caught up on things which drove me crazy.  I do have a very distinct hole/scar though, which doesn't really bother me. I'm kind of weirdly curious to see how it stretches as my belly grows.
  • They do make pregnancy length belly button rings, you could switch it out in third tri if you want to keep it!

  • I think I just read that Pink took out her nipple piercings for the duration of her breastfeeding because her nipples were like sprinklers once her milk came in. From my breastfeeding experience, I would say that can happen with or without piercings, but I can see how the flow might be more concentrated & directed with a piercing. Honestly you will be so motherloving tired from feeding the baby that any extra work is going to seem crazy. Lilu would eat for 45 minutes, sleep for an hour or so, repeat repeat repeat.

  • I took my navel ring out during my 1st pregnancy and I still have the hole there.  I felt that I was over having it at that point anyway.  I would def suggest just taking them all out to make your life easier if you're planning on nursing.  It's a lot of work as it is and adding the extra step of taking them out/putting them back in just seems like too much (for me anyway).  I had a heck of a time nursing with my first but pushed through it and had a successful time but it was definitely more difficult than I ever imagined.

And once you've gone through labor i'm sure getting them re-pierced will be a cake walk :)

  • With my first pregnancy my belly button piercing pushed out. I eventually (it was hard) removed my nipple piercings in order to breast feed. I say enjoy them until you can!!!! ;0
  • I have already taken my navel ring out. I was really only keeping it in since it was done. I felt the work to keep a place holder isn't really worth it. and maybe I was ready to grow up from it (i am with you on the 'dated' feeling of the belly ring!)

  • I took my belly button ring out with DS once it started getting uncomfortable (probably about 20 weeks or so).  After I had DS, the hole was still open so I put it back in.  Plan to wear it this time for as long as I can again!

(And I too feel like my stomach looks weird without it since I've had it for over 10 years haha)
