I'm a FTM and don't really get the significance of the going home outfit. It is going to be january so we are going to need to put something over him to go outside. I'm assuming he will be all wrapped up when leaving the hospital
I made a big deal out the going home outfit for DD. I looked and looked, picked it out, then rethought it. In the end I don't have a single picture, I can't remember for the life of me what she came home in, and frankly, it was frippin' cold so all I do remember is the blanket she had over her (which is easy to remember since it became her "blankie" like Linus from Peanuts). Our DD was 5lbs when she left the hospital (and 2 days past her DD) so I recall she was swimming in whatever outfit it was that she went home in. We ended up needing to buy preemie clothing to fit her for the first month. This time, it isn't a big deal to me. I'll just pick up something weather appropriate and in a newborn size with a backup preemie size in our bag.
I am the same way.... its just not a big deal. I have a picture of DS in his going home outfit, but he is in his car seat and you can barely see it. This LO will be wearing fleece jammies to go home in!

I don't think it's a big deal either. Yes, it was fun to know "this is the outfit my baby will wear home", but it wasn't anything special or anything that I specifically sought out. It was just something we picked for him to wear home. It was a fleece sleeper, which will also likely be similar to what this LO will be wearing as they're both winter babies!
We have the newborn sizes outfit that we will take to the hospital and use as the going home outfit but its just a warm sleeper and it wasn't until after I got it home form the store that I thought "oh she can wear that home". It's going to be super cold here so we'll have her all covered up anyway. We'll take a 3 month size sleeper with us as well just to make sure she has something that fits.
My cousin has her daughter's going-home outfit framed in a shadow box and hanging in the nursery. I guess if I was planning to display it, I'd want to make sure it was something sufficiently cute.
Personally, I will just pick an outfit or two from whatever clothes I get at the shower, but I can see where it would be a fun excuse to buy something for the baby that you might not otherwise.
My mom still has my going home outfit. I just think it's a sentimental thing and plan on having my LO wear a cute dress.
My mom still has mine too. Only she can't figure out where she put it. Last year at our wedding my brother and sil announced their pregnancy she was so excited she got out his going home outfit and mine. Now she's got no clue where they are. I was going to have my daughter wear what I wore . So I bought a convertible sleeper that's super warm looking and matching booties. It's not that cold here even in January to that with a blanket over her and one of the adorable hats my friends made she should be great :
For me it's the excitement of it simply being the first real thing ill really get to dress LO in. I didn't pick anything exciting, just a sleeper with some ducks on it with a matching hat and booties. I also have a fleece sleeper for the chilly weather to put over top when we take LO outside. I'll be taking some pictures and just want LO in something cute for them. After that, it's mostly plain onesies and sleepers, and I have a couple of visiting outfits for when it's time for that as well.
I never got it either. My son was in a wool footie pj to go home (he was born in Feb) and this one will be too. I think my photos of him in his carrier in his pjs are more than perfect!!

Ds's was just a random outfit I picked, I still have it in his keepsake box but it wasnt a big deal. This baby's is the outfit we bought her the day we found out she was a girl. So it's nothing fancy but its special because of the day we bought it.
It's the first real outfit that your baby wears, so it's fun to pick out your favorite outfit that you have to dress them for the first time.
It's also a fun way to remember them being that small. I have a doll that I dressed in a newborn diaper with the outfit my son wore home from the hospital, and it's fun to look back and remember him that tiny. I'm going to do the same with this one's outfit once she outgrows it.
I think for me, it's fun to have a keepsake so that down the road when they start asking about when they were babies I have something tangible to show them rather than just pictures.
I'm probably just going to get a cute onesie. I'm not too worried about it being cold here, our first date was on his due date and I didn't even wear a jacket. I love Florida
I don't get it either. I will not specifically buy something for her to wear home. When I pack my hospital bag I will pick my favorite comfortable outfit in NB and in 0-3 size (in case NB doesn't fit) and she will wear one of those home.

I think it depends on how sentimental you are. Some people will save the baby's "going home outfit" and preserve it as a keepsake/memory and like PPs have mentioned, often take photos of the baby leaving the hospital or in the carseat, etc. It's a momentous occasion (kind of like a wedding dress on your wedding day) so people like the outfit to be something special, rather than just an everyday onesie.

I'm more excited for the car seat cover than her outfit...those things look so darn comfortable. I wish they had them for adults. Soooo to answer your question--I'm more concerned about her being warm and comfy going outside for the first time than what the outfit looks like...especially since just me and her daddy will see it anyways.
I agree. Plus, my thought is that LO will have been evicted from the only place that he/she has known as *home* into a brand new, overstimulating world. I don't want to add to the sensory overload with some uncomfortable, frilly outfit. I'm leaving the hospital in yoga pants and a sweatshirt with my hair in a pony tail. And if I don't want to get dressed up, I don't think LO would appreciate it either! LOL!

To me it's kind of the first outfit I'll buy that he'll wear, so it's awesome, but I'm honestly not going to over think it. He'll be in something I like, probably the outfit I like the best, but I'm not sure I'll go shopping for it... although, nothing says classy-guy like a tux onsie!
I will be honest, I felt the same way until I was at my sisters baby shower last year and her MIL gave her the outfit that her husband wore home from the hospital and I thought it was so cute! I am pretty sentimental when it comes to stuff like that. I just thought it would be so cool to have it be something that was passed down. I do plan on buying a cute little outfit that I am also hanging in the nursery afterwards. It does not get that cold here in AZ so I am not worried about that.

I'm a STM and will not be planning a going home outfit - First time around we had DS in a cute little sweater Christmas jumper and it was such a pain! I will bring our new DS home in a sleeper...
Add me to the "don't understand it" club. This little one will probably wear something we had for DS. And the only reason I even remember what DS had on is because we do have pictures - but any of his footed sleepers would have been equally cute.
For sentimental keepsakes, we have one of the side snap newborn shirts they put him in at the hospital, his hospital hat, and his hospital bracelet. The outfit he had on in his car seat, under blankets, for his trip home was about as important to me as what I had on (which I don't even vaguely recollect).

We have a going home outfit because it has a jacket, long pants, and a warm onsie. Add some socks, a blanket and a benie tadah. But yes the other reason for having a go home outfit for myself this time is im definatly expecting people to be waiting at my house *oh joy* for us to come home. so it's alittle treat for them too
I said, "Oh my, what a marvelous tune" It was the best night, never would forget how we moved. The whole place was dressed to the nines, And we were dancing, dancing Like we're made of starlight Like we're made of starlight. ~TS
The way I'm making our LO's going home outfit special is to have a plain white sleeper monogrammed with his initials in light blue thread. I'll keep it for posterity reasons after he's grown out of it.
