Anyone not...

Anyone not taking their prenatal vitamins?  I had really bad sickness in the first trimester and taking the vitamins made me sicker so I stopped taking them.  I mentioned this to a nurse at my 12 week appointment and she said some women don't take them at all.  I have been trying to eat really healthy to compensate.  I was just wondering...how many of you don't take them at all?

  • I don't take them roughly one night per week.  I have had such bad nausea.  I do better eating whole foods, and really upping my intake of things like milk, fortified juices, whole wheat toast, etc.

No guilt.  I'm eating a very balanced diet, and notice that the 6 out of roughly 7 days I do take vitamins, I pee most of it out within 12 hrs anyway.

Have you tried gummies?  Target's brand of gummies are made by the same manufacturer as the brand sold at Whole Foods.  They have DHA, and most other important items except for iron.  They are soooo gently on my stomach.  Other vitamins, even prescriptions ones, were just killing me.  I would throw them up, or have really bad stomach pains.

Or kid vitamins?  I hear some doctors suggesting chewables of those.

  • I'm not taking prenatal vitamins.  My doctor said I should just continue to take the multivitamin that I was taking before I got pregnant.  For some reason whenever I tell people this they look at me like I'm crazy but I'm pretty sure my doctor knows what he is talking about.  My multivitamin gives me 100% of the folic acid I need and I'm pretty sure that is the most important vitamin we need right now from supplements.  I asked him why do so many people take prescription prenatal vitamins and he said it's just a way for the pharma companies to make $$.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.  I did try the gummies and couldn't take the after taste and threw those up.  I will ask my doctor about the kid vitamins tomorrow.  I feel pretty guilty about not taking the pills.  I have a really bad gag reflex and when they go in my mouth I start dry heaving.  Now that I am feeling better, I need to make more of an effort to take them.  Thanks!

  • I believe the most important thing in prenatal vitamins is the folic acid, which promotes proper brain and nervous system development.  I'm not sure, but I think green leafy vegetables contain folic acid.  Something to look up, but I know it's pretty important to baby's development.  I'm no expert, so someone correct me if you know more.

  • Try taking vitamins without iron.  Vitafusion gummies don't have iron, so they're easier on your tummy.  Also, the CVS brand that is comprable to Vitafusion is much cheaper and super tasty! Last week they were even BOGO, but I don't know if they still are.

  • I think I'm the outlier- I take prenatals (with iron and ADA per my OB's advice) and never have any stomach issues.  Most of the time I even take them on an empty stomach.

  • I'm just taking folic acid right now. My OB is cool with that.

I think the iron is what killed my stomach.  I now have like 6 brands at home, because it took that many bottles to find one that was gentle.

  • I'm starting to cut back a little *insert shame face here*  I take them probably 5 out of 7 days.  Sometimes swallowing that horse pill gets me gagging so I tend to skip it when I'm feeling particularly nauseated.  The gummy texture doesn't agree with me so that isn't an option.
  • They were making me feel sick on an empty stomach so I've just been taking them more with an un-empty stomach...

  • I didn't take them with DD- I felt guilty and spent the entire 9 months 'knowing' something was going to go wrong and it would be all my fault and she's healthy as can be (she's 3 now). With that being said, since I felt so guilty about not taking them I've been trying really hard to take them this time around, the first trimester was probably about 70%, and since the 2nd started I'm probably 95% of the time. I take them at night before I go to bed and they don't bother me, other than the water I drank that gets me up to pee... If you ask your doctor I'm sure she's going to tell you that you need to take them, but at the same time (and I'm by no means a medical professional) I doubt my mom took any type of vitamins when she was pregnant with me and I'm perfect... (totally kidding, BTW).
