hand and foot myth or real?

Is it true that once your LO has had hand and foot disease(if they get it) that they can't get it again? My DH mentioned this and I can't remember if I heard this to be true or if we are just hoping for this.

  • This is true.  I think there might be 2 strains, though.

  • I think that's true for most viruses.  Once you have it, your body usually develops immunities to it -- which is how vaccines work.  Viruses are constantly evolving though and a new strain can pop up, which you can catch.  Some viruses pop up later as something else - like chicken pox re-appears as an adult as shingles - it was living inside your body waiting to re-emerge the whole time.  Our bodies and science are so neat! :)

This.  Our pedi mentioned how the strain had changed in the last couple of years.

  • Since there is more than one virus that causes HFM, it is possible to get it again.

  • Unfortunately that is not true. They can in fact get it again.  DD and DH had it a few months ago and the Dr. said it's possible to get infected more than once.  Here's to hoping they don't!

According to above posters, it must be due to another strain.??? Here's hoping our Lo's are immune.

  • Definitely not true! My whole family had it once in the spring and then we just had a different strain last week. The first one I got really bad ulcers on my hands and feet. This time the ulcers were much smaller and I got them mostly in my mouth and throat with a few on my hands and feet.

  • According to something I read when DD had it, there are several strains that cause HFM.  So, similar to the common cold, you won't get the strain you already had, but you can still contract it again from a different strain.

I can't seem to find the link where I read that though.

  • We were told by our doctor that our little one could get it again, especially a different strain.  It seems I jinxed myself by reading all these HFM posts and our LO came down with it last week
  • There are more than a dozen strains, and different areas have different ones.

Usually true like chicken pox but occasionally some people get it again.  I for example have had HFM 2x.

  • I believe it's true...or at least very unlikely.  DS had roseola and I was told that is the case with that one.
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010
DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012

  • Not true unfortunately. DS had it twice this year from daycare. Wasn't as severe the second time though.

  • We had it at least 2x this year, probably a third time in the last couple of weeks that I also got.  Instead of sores on my mouth, I got cracks in the corners and a burning sensation on my lips which were redder than usual.  It also led to a nice sinus and ear infection for me.  DD had a few spots on her feet and abdomen.

  • False.  My 3yr old had it twice. First time wasn't so bad.  This summer he got it and it was horrible.  His finger and toenails have finally finished growing back 4months later.  Our Pedi said, just like the flu and cold viruses there are different strains.
