Weaning off of Nutramigen

Hi all,

When my son was 1 month old, he went through what we thought might be colic - just screamed and cried for no reason, gassy and constipated though we gave him Mylicon with each bottle, and had other issues like exzcema on his face. When he went to his one month appointment, his doctor said the symptoms sounded like a milk protein allergy and to try Nutramigen (we were using Enfamil Infant and then Gentlease).  Within 48 hours he started to improve, and a week later he was back to his happy self.

At his six month check up this week, we told the doctor he had no issues so far with solids, include rice and oatmeal cereal. He said since he's doing fine we could try weaning him off of Nutramigen, like starting out by switching 2 oz to Enfamil Infant for a week or more, see how that goes, then try 4 oz of Infant, and so on.  Has anyone tried this with their child? He said most babies grow out of it before 12 months but doctors recommend staying on it until it's time to switch them to whole milk.

I'm willing to try it for a week but wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with this.  Thanks!

~ Kris

  • No experience yet, my daughter is on Alimentum for her milk/soy allergy. She will stay on it at least a year since our insurance covers it but her dr did say we can try introducing dairy in the form of yogurt at 9 months. It's worth a shot, and if he has problems you'll likely know right away and can switch him back. Good luck!

  • My daughter is on Alimentum and her pedi said at her 6 month checkup that at 9 months to switch her to regular formula and see how she does. I actually went to see her two days ago to ask lots of questions regarding solids. I asked her since she does so well with the Alimentum couldn't I just leave her on it and go right from that to whole milk at 1 yr. She said that would be fine. Also our insurance covers it. To be it doesn't make since to switch from one to another formula when you'll find out quick once they get whole milk if they can handle it. Also she said I could try yogurt now and see if does ok with it. So I picked some up and plan on letting her try it tomorrow.

  • So we go to children's Hospital of Boston in there GI department. We have been told that they do not start weening kids off if these formulas to a year old for multiple reasons and the top one is that more they are exposed to it (MSPI ) the chance of them outgrowing it are compromised. They also start weening back onto milk products in a certain order. That way they are exposed in the right way. We are staying on it till DS is a year
  • My daughter was in nutramigen from 2 weeks old to 6 months. At 6 months the doctor told me I can try another formula. I went with Gerber good start gentle because it partially breaks down the proteins similar to nutramigen. My daughter wouldn't take a straight up gerber bottle right away. I mix my formula in a dr browns pitcher and i was doing half and half then every day i would decrease the nutramigen and increase the gerber scoops. The doctor told me i could just switch though didn't have to mix them or gradually introduce. I just had to do it that way. I've had no issues with the new formula and she's doing great.

  • The moms that got it covered by insurance - you're so lucky! My pediatrician tried everything he could for us but it was denied because they only pay for elemental formula (like Neocate and Elecare), not hypoallergenic. From the time he was 3 months old, my son has been going through 2 19.8 oz cans a week. He still is now because he's getting solid foods so he hasn't needed to increase his formula yet, but I know it'll happen soon and we'll be getting at least 3 cans a week :(
