Working Moms

If you have school aged children

I know before K they would just go to daycare, but what do you do with your 6, 7, 8, 9 year olds during the summer? I've not worked since 6/06, I was a SAHW for a few months before I got pg with DS1, and have been a SAHM ever since. DH's last day of work is Friday with no job lined up (no, this wasn't by choice). I haven't really been worried about it until last night, I knew we'd be ok, but what I'm most freaked about is health insurance. Anyway, I started thinking, what would we do for childcare before the kids are old enough to stay by themselves, but too old for daycare.

Re: If you have school aged children

  • Our school offers full-time child-care over the summers.  It's an extension of the before and after school they offer during the school year.  We haven't used it yet though as we are lucky enough to have my sister watch our children over the summers.

I believe most YMCAs offer summer programs as well.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • Daycamp.  Kids attend a variety of daycamps through the summer.  When they're old enough, they'll do some overnight camps as well (not all summer, obviously).  Also, when they're older, will probably trade off with other families for care-sharing (I take your kid on my holiday for a few days, you take my kid during another week).

I'm also lucky enough to have family local so we can get maybe as much as a week of coverage here and there for an older kid.

    But mostly daycamp.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • There's tons of different camps (with different prices).  You can also get a summery nanny--lots of college students are home for the summer and need jobs.

  • There are a lot of options:

-A lot of schools offer summer camp 5-12 yrs old (full days)

-YMCA summer camp 5-14 yrs old (full days)

-Your local parks and recreation facilities' summer camp 5-12 yrs old (full days)

  • We have daycamps for 5-12 year olds. Or most people around here have older teens to babysit. Lucky ds.
