Cloth Diapering

Suedecloth allergy or ammonia? [Long, sorry]

Hi folks, I could use your collective wisdom with a recent rash. LO is almost always in cotton prefolds. No rashes, no issues. Not even a problem being wet. As with most moms (I suspect), I have occasionally left her in a wet diaper longer than I should but still, no rash.

I have occasionally used pockets with the thought that it would be good to keep her dry if I'm going to be out and about for a while without convenient diaper change opportunities. I've used bamboo AMPs, Imagine pockets, Fuzzinbunz and Rumparoos without problems. I use fleece liners for night time without problems. I tried using a BG 4.0 the other day (which I've used about 3-4 times previously) and she ended up taking a long nap and staying in her diaper for 4 hours. She woke up horribly red and raw. She doesn't seem to be affected by it but it looks awful, especially around her vulva. It looks like a burn but is healing quickly with coconut oil and naked time.

Does this sound like a suedecloth allergy? It seems like only the BG sets her off, but I don't use my pockets enough to know if they all cause problems. Or is it more likely to be ammonia? I can't imagine it's detergent build up since the diaper is so new.

Thanks!

  • Did you not smell ammonia?  If it's an ammonia burn the smell would be pretty strong to cause a rash after just 1 nap.

If there was not ammonia smell and no other pockets cause a break out, I'm learning towards a suedecloth allergy.

  • Thanks for the responses! No ammonia smell, so I'm guessing suedecloth allergy it is. I guess it time to say goodbye to my beautiful Sassy diaper :(

Suede cloth irritated my LO until she was around 7 months.  Now she has no reaction.  Try using fleece liners with the diaper to see if that helps.  It could be that her urine was just stronger that time and she had a reaction from having it close to her skin for so long.
