Laboring at home

How does your doctor feel about you laboring at home?  I mentioned that I wanted to, but my doctor said he wanted me to come in pretty much right away.  I live really close to the hospital, but I think he is afraid of the tiny risk of uterine rupture.  Anyone have an OB that feels more comfortable with laboring at home for a while?

I think if my water doesn't break right away (as it did with my first) I'll stay at home for a bit and not mention it...

Re: Laboring at home

  • Yea my doc said to call them and they would determine where I was but that mostly likely if i was contracting fairly regularly or my water broke then I would need to go in.

Mine said something similar.  She wouldnt have me come in earlier just because I am a VBAC patient--so the same as what she tells all her patients

  • Mine said to come in right away and not to labor at home. She wants to monitor me and baby from the very start.

  • I was told to wait until I was *really* in labor by my MW. She didn't stress getting there the second I started contracting or anything. I ended up showing up pushing (which is honestly what I had hoped for!).

  • My doctor encouraged me to come in early as well. I did not though - and am glad I waited. My labor was 46 hours. There is no way they would have let me labor that long in a hospital. I ended up go to the hospital 14 hours before DS was born.

  • My CNM wanted me to labor at home for a while before coming in.  She wanted me to call her once my water broke or I started having regular contractions (but if they weren't too bad, she wanted me to wait until ~6am if I went into labor in the middle of the night, which I did, LOL).  Then she told me to just eat, rest as much as I could, pack my bag if I hadn't already, etc. and call her back in about an hour.  She said she'd know it was time for me to come into the hospital if DH had to call instead of me, because I couldn't talk through the contractions.
