'it's a boy and his name is Jaymes'

Of course I made the mistake of asking oit of curiosity why it would be spelled like that instead of James mom is still pregnant and now this girl is in tears and insulted because everyone else loves how unique and original Jaymes is so he will be different than all the other James...but it's still pronounced the same, so I don't understand

  • Apologize.

It's not your son's name to understand.

I simply asked why she was spelling it that way? She answered and I left it at that. Why would I apologize for that? I wasn't mean, I just asked when she asked me if I loved it.
  • She is emotional - she will get that question for the rest of her kid's life. If she is going to spell it that way she better get some tougher skin and develop the attitude that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Or she needs to stop sharing this information with everyone before it's on the birth certificate. Just tell her NMS and move on - not everyone likes every name - get used to it lady.

  • I  don't think there's anything wrong with asking. If she's going to announce the name while she's pregnant, she has to assume she's going to get opinions and questions.

She and the child will be getting questions for the rest of their lives anyway on why there's a "y" in the middle of a perfectly classic name. Might as well prepare her.

DH has NEVER been asked why there is a Y in the middle of Jason.  EVER.  I disagree with you.

  • You are probably the only person with the balls to question it. I guarantee that not everyone else loves how unique and original Jaymes is.

ETA: It's not like she went "OMG I can't believe you named him something so dumb!". It was just a question. The answer could have been "oh I was trying to be unique" or "oh he's named after a family member". I don't see why that isn't a valid question. She left it at that. When I was pregnant with my DD people questioned why we wouldn't be calling her Beth or Liz. I didn't care.

My mom went all you-neek on my name, and when I can't get anything personalized or have anyone spell it right I wonder why my mom thought that was a good idea. I ask her, and so do other people, why she thought that was a good idea.

Maybe people won't ask Jaymes why his name is spelled like that, but he'll probably ask himself and his mom after other people constantly spell it wrong.

I guess I worded my reply wrong.

  • I felt so mean, I just asked and she ran away crying. There was no meaness in my question so I'm glad to hear this wasn't a terrible thing to do. The young woman in question was upset that he grandmother keeps spelling it 'james'

I had a lot of people question my son's name. Gabriel is apparently a boring old man's name but I love my sons name and never was hurt by opinions. I wonder if the responses may have been better if I wasn't 19 among coworkers my age.

But I am guessing he has many, many times had to spell his name out for people who assume the traditional spelling.   I have a name that has a few accepted spelling variations and I am constantly asked how to spell it (or getting it spelled wrong).

If someone wants the attention of unique spelling, they should be prepared for the questions that will likely accompany it.

  • Jaymes is better than Semyaj.

Personally I wouldn't have asked about the Y, but I do think the MTB overreacted.

A y is Jason makes sense - it could mean son of Jay, hence Jayson.  I wouldn't question that either.  But, I sure as hell would wonder why someone put a random Y in the name Jaymes.  It doesn't mean anything, do anything, or accomplish anything.

Jaymes could mean the mes of Jay...  Just sayin'!! ;P

That's not why he's Jayson, but I do understand your point.

OP sounded snotty in her OP, and has since explained that she wasn't.  I'm over it.

People misspell sh!t all.the.time.  Not just names.  I'm surprised half of America can understand the other half of America's written word.  It's awful.  I still can't believe we haven't seen text speak spelling of names yet.

  • I don't think you did anything wrong. Someone else probably told her they didn't like it so she's a little sensitive about it...whatever. I never tell anyone what I think about their name choice unless they ask. (except maybe on here :P)

If you see her again maybe just tell her you meant no insult by your question, you were genuinely curious. If she asks if you like it, just tell her it's not your style or whatever. Use flowery words so it doesn't sound like you think the spelling is ridiculous, even though it is. It is her choice and if she wants to toss a random letter in Ja(y)mes she can, however weird it is. Who knows, it might even catch on like Jaxon...

    Hahaha!

Honestly, I agree with your second statement.  I was reading a comment on another website from a high school teacher.  She said "Girls think that if they have their man's baby's then they'll stay."  I was like, "You're a high school teacher??"

That's it- I'm homeschooling this little one!

    Kidding :)

  • I don'tthinking asking was wrong.  I wouldn't ask because I wouldn't be able to hide my eye roll.

Umm...I get that it is pronounced James but I keep reading it like Jamie's (I grew up with a girl named Jayme).

  • Obviously, it totally depends HOW you asked it not WHAT you asked. I could see myself asking totally innocently. I mean, I would be curious to know if there was a meaning behind the Y. If she's in tears and insulted, it makes me wonder if you were a little harsh. I think the spelling is terrible, but it's her kid so whatever.

Yeah, but I've heard of Jayson... not Jaymes.

  • I think it's a totally legit question... and I would have loved it if she could have given you an answer!

  • I think it's great that you asked her. Now maybe she'll rethink her position before this baby is born and saddled with a tacky name for the rest of his life.  Her issue is that all of the people she is telling are lying through their teeth and oohing and ahhing over a poor decision rather than telling her the truth.

In addition to asking, I probably would have volunteered, "hmm...  I don't think I'd do that, people are going to spell it wrong all the time."
