Baby Names

Does this girl name sound like it's trying too hard?

My husband and I have a special place in our hearts for Acadia National Park....

We've been thinking of girl names and Acadia (uh-KAY-dee-uh) came up.  But I'm not sure if it sounds too affected.

Thinking Cadie for short... Middle name would probably be Rose after my grandmother.

What do you guys think?

  • Is there anything about the Park or in the Park that you could use?  Acadia is just associated with a crossover for me as well.

While I do like the name, I don't like it on a child so much.

  • It's NMS, but I don't think it sounds like you're trying too hard.  I do really like the nn Cadie.

  • It's a historical colony of New France, a university where I live, and a car. I would LOL at it as a name.
Actually I taught one a few years back when I was a dance teacher, and colleagues and I snickered over it. But if you live nowhere near the former colony, it might not sound so weird?

Eta: I don't know where you live, but the French speaking population of Eastern Canada are known as Acadians. So I would also assume you were French speaking or had strong ties to Acadian culture.

  • yup... I think the crossover... Cadie is really cute nn though... Maybe use it as a middle name?

It's just on the list with Royce, Mercedes, Lexus, & Bently for me... I'm all for pets as cars, but NMS for kids.

If you feel like it's too much, you could always throw it in the middle name spot.

  • I don't know about the car, but I would place it in the same category as people who name their kids India, China, Dakota, etc. If you aren't Acadian, it's a little weird. If you are, it's a little redundant.
  • I was married in Bar Harbor, and my IL's family has lived on Mount Desert Island for generations so I thought I'd offer my opinion.  I did think really hard about any alternative names that could come from the park or Mount Desert Island in general, and I couldn't come up with any girl names except Jordan - for Jordan Pond.

Acadia will always be the park in my mind before it's ever the SUV.  I don't really see the SUV name as an issue.  It's not really the same as naming your kid Cadillac or Bentley because those are brand names, while Acadia is a model name, which will be in production for who knows how long?  It may be gone and forgotten about in a few years.

FWIW, Camden is also an extremely popular tourist destination in Maine and I usually think of it when I hear the name, but not in any negative sort of way.

Acadia is NMS personally, but I think it's a fine name.

This is what I thought of. I would not think of this as a person's name.

  • W Hat about Acadia as a middle name?  I totally get what you're trying to do, but I agree on the association with the vehicle.

    Yeah this. :/ Sorry :(

  • I like it and I'd never think of the car.

When it comes to place names, the question I ask myself is, "Do the people who live there use this name?" Take Brooklyn as an example ? it is least popular in New York, followed by New Jersey, and most popular in the West, Midwest, and South. This says to me that people who are familiar with Brooklyn tend not to name their daughters Brooklyn.

But what about Acadia? It is most popular in . . . Maine! Followed by Massachusetts! So people who know Acadia best are most likely to use it as a name. That is a positive in my book.

I say go for it. Cadie is adorable. Another unusual New England place name I like is Merrimac (Merri).

I've never met or heard of anyone named Acadia.  For those who know Acadia as the park I think it would have positive associations to it, but it certainly is not a common name here.  I think people here would be less likely to name their kid Acadia because the park is so well known here, and it's not a real name.

Although Camden was 69 of 100 for last year in Maine (and it's never broken 100 for the US in the past 10 years), so some people in Maine are naming their kids Camden.  Whether it be for the town or not, it's hard to say.  Camden is a real name though.

For a "made up" name (which I typically don't go for at all), I don't think Acadia is too bad, especially with the nickname.

  • I really like it. The car didn't even occur to me and as pp mentioned will be out of production by the time your DD is in school. Very cute IMO.

That's not true. In 2011, Mainers were more likely to name their daughters Acadia than the residents of any other state. That's my whole point. The name isn't even on the radar of most states, but Maine residents do use it (as do Massachusetts and New York residents, though not as often as Maine residents). You're right that it is still uncommon ? it's currently #219 in Maine ? but it is much more common in Maine than elsewhere (Acadia ranked #3755 nationally in 2001). To me, that indicates a positive association, as opposed to Brooklyn, which is less popular among New Yorkers than among residents of any other state.

  • I think that name is pretty, but like PP's mentioned, it does make you think of the car =)

but so does Portia = Porche, and people still name their DD's that.

These same people also moved to Louisiana.  They're often lumped in with Cajuns.  Acadian architecture is its own recognized style.

Truthfully, though, I didn't think of any of the things named in this post - not the people, the park, or the SUV lol.  I wouldn't side-eye you.  I really like the nn Cadie.

  • I do think of the car but I don't mind the name and I think rose is a nice mn for it.

  • Unfortunately, GMC has ensured that people will think of a large SUV when they hear the name. Why not use Acadia as a middle name?

I think GMC has people thinking of a mid-sized crossover rather than a large SUV...

  • Personally, I really love both the name and the significance.  We honeymooned in Bar Harbor, so that was the first thing I thought of.  I do understand the SVU reference, but I'm hopeful that would be something that eventually goes away?

I might be in the minority, but I like Acadia Rose better than Rose Acadia.

This. I drive a 2012 GMC Acadia, it's not huge.

OP, I like the mn idea. However, if your heart tells you this is the name and makes since in your area, go for it.

  • My family is Acadian soo... it feels like an odd name to me. I think it could grow on me though. Never heard of the car! (I'm in Canada if that makes a difference)
  • I don't mind it. I think of the park first, then the SUV. I prefer Rose Acadia because to me, Acadia Rose sounds like a plant growing in the park.

  • I think it is a cute name and the significance is nice but I associate it with an university and the car. Maybe you could come up with a name that is similar to Acadia? Love the middle name by the way.
