Months for lay-people

I have two months until my due date.  To people who aren't mothers of children less than 5 years old, would that make me 7 or 8 months?  I always thought 9 months was the "almost there" mark, but that might be because I'm the last in my social circle to have a baby.  DH and my dad say 9 months is the EDD.[Poll]

Re: Months for lay-people

  • I have no idea since I am a mom of a 2 and 4 year old. However, if it comes up I can always say how many months I am as well as when I am due. I think there is probably still a misconception that 9 months is it. But Moms of young ones at the very least should know that it is 10 months.

  • Oh and to answer your question, if you are due in two months then you are eight months pregnant. Give or take a week or so depending on today's date versus actual day you are due
  • IMO, you're at the beginning of 9 months at 36w, which means you are technically at the beginning of 10 months at EDD.  To me, saying you are nine months pregnant means, "I'm going to have the baby within a month", not "I'm due/over-due".

This actually makes the most sense to me now that I read it.  I've never had someone put it this way before.  You are pregnant for 9 months so you are in your 9th month up until your EDD.  I have been going by my EDD and counting backwards so since I'm due on 11/28, I've been saying I'm 7 months pregnant but I guess that's only slightly accurate as well.

  • Well I always thought the 9 months are from time of conception to EDD. However, when you count in weeks you count from your last period date so you end up closer to 10 months.. and then you add the months that have 31 days vs. 30.. you can pretty much an extra 4 days.. That's why it is more accurate to count in weeks.

  • I don't know. Ha. A couple of the older women in my office have asked in the last week how many months I am, I stared at them blankly & then answered in weeks. With all the tests I have to do & all my HR issues, I live my life in weeks, not months!!

  • Think of it this way - you are 1 year old ON your first birthday.  For all the weeks leading up to it, you are in your first year.  So right now you have two months to go so you are 7 out of 9 months pregnant.  You are IN your 8th month and the 4 weeks before you give birth you'll be IN your 9th month.

  • Do the math:

    40 weeks,4 weeks a month, 10 months.

That is from week one of pregnancy though. Most people dont find out till at least 4 weeks which makes one month go away, so it seems like 9 months.

There are more than 4 weeks in a month, except for February........

That would make sense if every month had four weeks.

There are 52 weeks in a year, which is 12 months. Pregnancy due dates are on the 40w mark. That leaves 12 weeks left, which is more than two months, but less than three.

Your due date is 9 months and some change. Way closer to 9 months than ten months, though.

Thank you. I was feeling like a crazy person for a minute there! I count it like this too.

  • Pregnancy is not 10 months. People who see pregnancy = 40 weeks often assume 1 month = 4 weeks, therefore pregnancy = 10 months (4 x 10).

Not true, not every month is exactly 4 weeks.

ETA: I just think everyone looks at it different, whatever.  I look at it though that you aren't actually 9 months until the end, you are "in" your 9th month at 36/37 weeks, but aren't actually 9 months (I know may sound confusing).
Example I'm in my 27th week as of today, today I also entered my 7th month, but I won't actually be 27 weeks until the end and not 7 months until the end of 30 weeks.

Again, that's just how I view it.

  • im new to the board so if im stepping on anyones toes, im sorry. I have had 6 kids and have had this converstation more than once. According to my ob doctor this morning, pregnancy is measured up to 10 months. You count from the date of conception till the due date and it should be 40 weeks give or take. If you are 36 weeks you are 9 months and still have 1 month(4 weeks) to go. if you are 32 weeks that would make you 8 months with 2 months(8 weeks) to go. Im currently 30 weeks and have 10 to go at my appt this morning. I hope this helped and didnt affend anyone for offering my opinion since i do have kids under 2 and pregnant with my 6th currently

But months are more than four weeks.

    A week has 7 days.

October has 31 days, for example.

    31 divided by 7 equals 4 weeks 4 days.

  • # of weeks pregnant divided by 52. take that number and multiply times 12. that is how many months pregnant you are.

  • This question is why I always say "I am in my 8th month" instead of saying "I am 8 months pregnant". For some reason it makes more sense to most people.

It finally clicked for me when I saw this handy chart - it's very much common sense, but it's nice for a visual person like me :o)

It is not 10 months. Four weeks =/= one month. Pregnancy lasts 9 months.  If we are talking lunar months, then yes, it is 10.  But calendar months, it's 9.

  • I don't get why this is so confusing.  I got my last period at the end of July the year my son was conceived.  He was born on 5/11 and was close to two weeks late.  Count it out:

End of July to end of August=1, Aug-Sep=2, Sep-Oct=3, Oct-Nov-4, Nov-Dec=5, Dec-Jan=6, Jan-Feb-7, Feb-Mar=8, Mar-end of April=9 + he was two weeks over, thus born in May.  Yes, from conception to birth my pregnancy occurred in 10 named months but didn't span 10 entire months.

  • I just tell people how many weeks I am, and they can figure it out haha. Or I tell them (now that I am close to the end) how many weeks until my due date.
A woman's life is nine parts mess to one part magic, you'll learn that soon enough...and the parts that look like magic turn out to be the messiest of all.
  • Neither answer is right as pregnancy lasts a total of 10 months.

  • This was really confusing for me too, and have struggled to answer the question "how far along are you?" in months instead of weeks. I always tell DH I got jipped because I'll be pregnant 11 out of 12 months in 2012! We conceived on January 31st and are due November 5th.

Sigh.  No, it does not.  40 weeks is not the same as 10 months.  Months are longer than 4 weeks and it doesn't seem like a big deal to have an extra 3 days except when you're multiplying it by 9.  Then it matters.

  • LOL @ people thinking pregnancy lasts 10 months.
  • Due dates are at 40 weeks which is not the 9 month mark, it's closer to 9 full months. So when you hit 40 weeks your closer to the 10 month mark.

  • always found the 9 months myth annoying.  I wish...!

  • Your EDD is technically at 9 months if you are counting the months as the 2nd to the 2nd and such but many (including myself) think of it in months of 28 days which would make pregnancy 10 months long.

Only every third month has five weeks, two out of those three months has four weeks. Therefore you are closer to 10 months and any doctor would say that a full term pregnancy from day of last period to EDD is 10 months. Not that it lasts 10 months, but you have completed your 9th month.
