Cleaning Lady - Insurance?

I am in the midst of interviewing women to clean my house.  I had previously used a service, but would like a little more flexibility in what they clean (more on this in a moment), plus would like to pay a little less.

It was taking me so much time to pick up before the service came that I was more anxious about that than having a messy house.  So, I want someone who will come in, assess and figure out what to clean based on the "condition" of the house vs feeling like I am paying x amt of money and not really getting my money's worth unless everything is picked up and in it's place.  Also, I was getting sick of being nickled & dimed for add'l little services (changing sheets, wiping the fronts of cabinets, edging, etc).

At any rate, is your cleaning person insured?  What about bonded?  I am going to ask about insurance when I follow up, but...just wanted to see if others thought this was a huge deal or not.

Re: Cleaning Lady - Insurance?

  • ugh - I don't even know.

I assume not though b/c I pay her cash, so I doubt she pays taxes.

She's worked for several of my neighbors for years so I trust her.

  • Ummm, I don't know if she's insured.  Probably not.  She does clean a bunch of houses in my neighborhood, and I checked her references before I hired her, so I trust her.
  • I don't think so.  Like the others, our cleaning lady was rec'd by neighbors and we pay cash.

  • No, ours is not.  She explained why not (more money for her to pay, when she's already covered by her own homeowner's insurance), and she came on recommendation so it never bothered me.

  • Doubtful.  She is paid in cash.
