Working Moms

Pocono Area/ Lehigh Valley/ Stroudsburg Moms

Are there any moms on this board in the Pocono area?  We currently live in Bucks county- just north of Philadelphia, but DH and I are considering moving north for cheaper housing, more land, lower cost of living.  DH works in NYC and currently commutes by train and wants to know whether the commute from Pocono area by car or bus is really manageable in 2hrs or less.  The goal is that with a lower cost of living I'd be able to be a SAHM.  Anyways, if there's anyone that lives in that area and has any insight on areas that are commutable to NY, I'd love to hear from you.

Re: Pocono Area/ Lehigh Valley/ Stroudsburg Moms

  • I don't live in pa, but we did rent a house in the poconos a couple of summers in a row and dh commutted to work for a few days to NYC. It was long and expensive, but I am guessing commute from where you are now is also long... Dh's bus ride took about 1.5 hours plus car ride to the house another 2030 min.
I think he used Martz trailways.

  • I went to undergrad in that area and knew many people who commuted by bus.  It is a long trip.  I guess technically it can be done in under 2 hours but once you are "there" I would imagine getting to your specific location in the city would take a bit more time.  But I would bet it wouldn't be much different than his current commute.
  • I grew up in the LV and it blows my mind how many ppl commute from that area now...I personally wouldn't want to do it but I would imagine it is no different than from Bucks County which is also long? We lived in NYC & NJ for awhile and I can understand crossing the border for lower COL but I would think it would be 2 hrs minimum depending on what time he leaves and where in NYC he works unless he works very close to port authority.  I *think* the commute from the pocono area might be a little better b/c you just shoot straight across 80 & the traffic maybe is better in the first part of the ride but I'm not sure.

I dunno, for me the tradeoff would be tough (I don't really want to be a SAHM though)--- you get to stay home but your H is potentially gone more hours a day, might be really stressed & whatnot from the commute when he gets home you're in a new place, etc... I would go a little crazy I think.  Is there any chance of him working elsewhere in the future or is he in an industry that is pretty much NYC or nothing?

(Also I just saw he takes the train now-I think there are ppl who like taking the bus vs the train I think (at least you don't get stuck w/ the middle seat & the seats are more comfortable haha) but while I know NJT and other trains have problems & delays on the track, getting stuck in traffic seems like a worse option to me, but I have never commuted via bus, only train. Plus if he is used to coming in to Penn Station, how would going to Port Authority change his commute? Even when I was living in NJ and commuting in, I was a 10-15 min or so walk from Penn Station- going to PA would have tacked at least another 10-15 min onto my commute at least b/c of having to take a subway + walking or just walking a number of blocks further).

    GL!

  • I live in the Lehigh Valley! I know a lot of people who commute into NYC via bus or train (the trains are from NJ). It is definitely cheaper than where you live, and there are a lot of great things for kids here. No offense to anyone who lives in the Poconos, but compared to where you live, that would feel very isolated to me.

  • I'm a lurker on this board, but I do live in the Lehigh Valley. I live near Allentown and it's about 2 hours to NYC from here by bus (I've taken the Bieber Bus a few times and FYI they sell commuter bus passes). It's really a straight shot to NYC on Route 78 from here, but 2 hours is still a long trip every day. I absolutely love the Lehigh Valley area, and I agree that the Poconos are pretty isolated with not as much to do. Where I live now we are in the suburbs, but there is so much to do in Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton and it's so close to Philly and NYC. I say go for it!

Here is the link for Bieber Bus if you haven't checked them out... the Wescosville station is near Allentown and that is a 2 hour trip to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Hellertown station is near Bethlehem and would be less than 2 hours. GL!

  • Here's a link for transbridge, this is another bus line a lot of ppl in Bethlehem take into the city-

    https://www.transbridgelines.com/sched_ny.htm

WIlliam Penn Highway is one you might want to look at just for reference- this is right b/w Bethlehem & Easton essentially, right near the intersection of 33 & 78.  From there it looks like the ride is 2 hrs give or take some time depending on stops so you'd have to add on commute time to the bus stop plus to his office.

Also I didn't say this in my original post but ditto the other posters about more going on in the LV (though I suspect the pocono area has prob changed a lot in the last 10 yrs w/ so many ppl moving out there)---  even the restaurant scene in the LV has gotten a lot better in the last 10 yrs plus it is still pretty easy to get down to the Bucks Cty area or into NJ or NYC for things.  To shorten the commute, stick to Easton or Bethlehem areas.

Since most of them spend all of their time traveling to NYC everyday - not enough has changed to make being a SAHM very enjoyable. OP I answered you on the other board but wanted to add that if I had to pick I would take LV for sure.  My company had an office in Bethlehem so I have friends there and have spent some time there.  I think it's a really nice area.  My sister lives in the Poconos and would like to move to LV if she can ever sell her house.

  • Thank you for all of the insight. This is more DH's crazy idea than mine. He figures he's already commuting 2hrs/day, doesn't think it can be much worse. He went to college in Scranton and loves the idea of living in the mountains. I like the idea- in theory. But because DH works such long hours and long commute, I rely on my mom a lot for help with the kids. I think it would be hard whether working or SAH, being away from our families. I don't think I could manage without the support system we have here.
