Floor lamps in toddler bedrooms

What kind of floor lamp would you use in a toddler bedroom?  We don't have any lights in the room other than lamps, and there will be only one surface (the top of his dresser) that I can place a small table lamp on, which won't be enough lighting for the entire room.  I've been trying to find a floor lamp that he won't be able to pull down on himself, but am getting stuck.  We have a lamp like this (https://www.target.com/p/floor-shelf-lamp-silver-ca/-/A-14013724) in the nursery but the he gets all excited about the toys/decorations on the lamp and wants to play with  the stuff on it, which is the opposite of what I'm wanting him to do.  I've been thinking that this kind of lamp (https://www.target.com/p/tripod-floor-lamp-silver/-/A-13557538) may be safer because it is a tripod with no shelves.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Floor lamps in toddler bedrooms

  • I would try one like this https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40180971/, where the ....I don't know what they're called, tendrils? are flexible, but the whole this is very not exciting. Also LED bulbs mean even if he managed to knock it into something there wouldn't be a bunch of broken glass all over.

  • I wouldn't, but I have mini heathens that turn inocuous objects into dangerous weapons. I had to take out a coat stand out of the girls room before we moved because they were trying to spin on it. Could you get something mounted? Is it a pain to install a ceiling light?
  • We had to install ceiling fans with lights.  My older son is a maniac and would pull anything and everything down.  We actually had to build this huge contraption to keep him from unplugging the monitor.
  • We bought a swag light kit and a Japanese paper lantern to cover it. Then bought a metal strip made to hold the cord against the wall so he can't strangle himself.

We have a floor lamp in the family room. DH screwed an eye into the wall, looped a ribbon thru the eye and tied it in a knot around the lamp. Viola, the lamp is tied to the wall. We did this after the lamp was tipped over and both light bulbs shattered on the hardwood floor.

  • We have this one in our guest room, There's not much to it weight wise and even if she knocks it over it's just rice paper and a very light base so the likely hood of her getting hurt is low.  Plus it's 10 bucks so if it doesnt work you arent out a ton of money.

We also have this one in DD's room on a shelf and it gives off a lot of light.  The side are these rubbery plastic things that clip together.  Not something I would put at toddler level but a fun option for a kids room.  We have just this in DD's room  (no overhead lights here either) which is 18x14 and it gives off plenty of light for the whole room.

  • I'd mount some plug-in wall sconces to the wall and use a strip to attach the cords to the wall. You can paint the cord strips to match the wall color.

  • Honestly, I think I would find a way for a light to be installed on the ceiling.  Floor lamps are super easy to knock down and can then be an additional fire hazard.  Unless there is a way to put it in a corner and then have a large piece of furniture in front of it to avoid a tip, I wouldn't do it.  Our only floor lamp is in our living room, and we did just that.  It is in a corner and we have a large leather arm chair blocking its access.

  • I'd find a way to install something.  Of course, we lost a floor lamp to DS a few months ago, so I'm a little biased.

  • I have this one. I bought it before I even realized it could be a problem and luckily my kids couldn't care less about it and have never tried to knock it down.
