We were planning on making organic baby food for DD around 6/7 months- but I just discovered BLW and it makes a lot of sense to me. I showed DH and he's all for it. He is a little worried about choking but think she will be able to figure it out.
I want to try it but I am nuerotic about anything baby and really worry about choking.
When did baby start eating? what foods did you start with? Any scary incidents? Does your pedi know, what do they think? If your LO goes to day care, what do they eat there? Thanks!
Re: BLW-your experience?
When did baby start eating?
I'm pretty sure we started around 7mos. We weren't in any hurry to start solids.
What foods did you start with?
With whatever we were eating. I'm pretty sure that spaghetti and yogurt were among her first meals.
Any scary incidents?
I'm sure there was once or twice that we might have panicked but nothing that I can remember so it couldn't have been that bad. Our families panicked all the time but the concept was so new to them.
Does your pedi know, what do they think?
We have since switched pedis but the one we had was a little hesitant because she knew nothing about it but said she didn't see any medical reason it shouldn't be done. She still tried to encourage cereal for iron but other than that we just talked about it once and let it go. Guess we'll see what our new pedi thinks when the time comes. I expect her to be a little more open minded.
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
I'm on my way out the door, so can't share much. I will say I tooootally believed in it, and still there were times in the very beginning that I was sitting on my hands - literally SITTING on my hands to stop from helping him. It can be a little scary, but I just kept the faith.
He really started with what we were eating. I think his first tastes of food were yogurt off a spoon of mine (him holding), then hummus sucked off a cracker, and then a banana in spears. I did tell my pedi and he just said, "Oh, okay...well, be very cautious and careful" but nothing more. LO does go to DC. Our DC providers in the infant room had read the BLWing book so they were totally on board and excited about it. At my son's DC (it's infant through pre-k), they serve lunch and two snacks, so I would circle what he could have off the menu for the month and they would offer it to him just like the 2, 3, 4 year olds eat it...everything from spaghetti, pizza, fried rice, every fruit and vegetable under the sun, cereal, crackers, cheese, etc. He's now a fantastic eater (more fantastic at DC than home, but still great overall).
Have you read the book? That helped me to be able to sit on my hands and worry a little less. The book is a really comprehensive resource.
ETA: we started at 5.5 months, when he literally pulled a spoon out of my hands and I figured it couldn't hurt to let him taste it if he wanted. From then on, I'd let him taste what I was and by 6 months, we were sitting down for family meals together and all sharing whatever was for dinner
When did baby start eating? 5.5 months with DS, 4.5 months with DD
what foods did you start with? avocado, banana, sweet potatoes
Any scary incidents? Once DD choked on a halfed grape and I had to literally lean her forward and pound on her back until it came loose, but she was well over 1. Could have happened to anyone.
Does your pedi know, what do they think? Never really mentioned it.
If your LO goes to day care, what do they eat there? N/A.
When did baby start eating? Early, but it was a few tastes or tries at something here or there, not regularly. We tried putting it off, but she was ready and interested, so we thought it was silly to be thinking that we would do baby led weaning if we were really holding her back. Regular "meal" started at more like 5.5mo, so still early, but not a lot.
What foods did you start with? Apple, 'cause she wanted to share with daddy. Banana. Sweet potato fries.
Any scary incidents? Not that I can remember. When we moved to smaller pieces there was some coughing/gagging, but no choking. I saw her have a choking response to something, very briefly (cleared it on her own) much later, when she was well passed 1.5yr, on something she'd eaten plenty before, and just got down her throat wrong.
Does your pedi know, what do they think? Yup, we told her. She was fine with it. (As in, ok, great.)
If your LO goes to day care, what do they eat there? N/A

When did baby start eating? 6 months. For BLW you need to wait to they are 6 months and can sit up by themselves.
What foods did you start with? avocado and spear of sweet potato
Any scary incidents? Not really . . . although in the beginning I was definitely worried.
Does your pedi know, what do they think? Yup. Thought it was great. Never any pressure to do cereals or start food earlier.
If your LO goes to day care, what do they eat there? DD is in daycare. We started with dinner and then breakfast, so it was a while before she was eating lunch. By that time she was probably 9 months old and was a pro!

I think we started with banana and avocado and such things. He now eats yogurt with baby cereal added to it, lots of fruits, pasta and rice and mashed potatoes and such things, he has had tiny amounts of meat and cheese. He really likes chocolate... he got into my stash in the pantry! Other than occasional near choking type stuff, we haven't had anything scary... no food allergies so far, but I am not a dairy overloader. He really likes coconut milk!
As to the other questions... I'm a SAHM for now. My DS has been to a pedi once... for a meet and greet. Hahaha. I'm a terrible parent! I don't even know precisely how much my son weighs at present. But he's healthy and growing and that's what matters the most!
We started solids with a baby led approach at 6 months.
Started with sweet potato, avocado
Pedi never asked
doesn't go to day care
we love BLW - so easy! Ds is only now just really starting to get into solids, he just played the first few months.
DS born via unplanned C-section at 40w6d
We started with solids right at 6 months. His first meal was blueberry pancakes, sausage, green beans, and some homemade grapefruit jello. He LOVED it. We took video of it here (and you can see exactly what the "gagging" looks/sounds like):

We started him right off the bat with whatever we were eating. The first week he was introduced to melons, pork, chicken, steak, broccoli, avocado, mango, etc. He didn't start actually ingesting the food for probably a month.
We haven't had any scary incidents - lots of gagging at first, but I didn't really consider that scary since I knew what we were looking for.
It's never really come up with my pediatrician. At 4 months he gave us the go-ahead to start solids and we told him we'd like to wait till 6, which he was fine with. At 6 months he asked if we'd introduced solids and I told him how much my guy loves eating and that was pretty much it.
We didn't send food into daycare with him for the first 6 weeks. Just did solids at home and BM at daycare. Around 7.5 months I spoke with his DCPs and they hadn't heard of BLW, but loved the idea. I started sending him in with easy stuff like cheese, mango, avocado for a couple of weeks. When that seemed to go okay, I just started packing him normal lunches - pasta, sandwiches, stews, chicken, etc. His day care loves it. He's such an easy baby at mealtimes and he loves eating.
