You can use it with a newborn, but you'll want to either get the newborn insert for it (about $20) or put a rolled up receiving blanket at the bottom so LO will be high enough in the carrier.

I got the insert but the other day a new mom told me they carried their newborn to the side with both legs out one side. Don't know if that's correct but I guess you could try it? I'm pretty sure their baby was bigger.
