Tried Baby Whisperer Technique today

Today we tried the Baby Whisperer (and probably suggested by others too) of putting LO down awake and only picking her up to soothe her if she was crying but putting her back down immediately once she stopped crying.  We started with her second nap of the day and it worked well for the second and third nap.  I didn't have to pick her up for her 2nd and only once for the 3rd.  Well come her 4th nap a little after 6:00, it was awful.  I probably picked her up 20 times and as soon as I would put her down or sometimes before I would put her down she would start crying again.  There were some periods where she was in her nap nanny not crying and a few times particularly near the end, she almost went to sleep, but then she would wake up and start crying. DH is up there now, trying to get her to go to sleep in his arms.  Not sure what we will do from here. We tried this approach because she was crying herself to sleep in our arms anyway.  We are going to go see a sleep coach (but they will do sleep shaping with us since she is less than 6 months old--motto sure on the difference but that's what they said).  Hopefully they will be able to help...

Re: Tried Baby Whisperer Technique today

  • I tried this technique when DS just turned 3 months, and we had success with it.  Prior to this, he was napping inconsistently, and it was not good for either him or us.  Anyway, I did the same thing - put him down while awake, wait out the crying (we did 5 minute intervals b/c he was so young), go in and soothe him without picking him up.  It was hard for the first few days, and I definitely picked him up the few times he was totally freaking out, but I promise that it will work!  Babies rely on consistency.  Just remember that she needs this to have a healthy sleep.  Hang in there!

  • That's a good start.  I read "Baby Whisperer" and also "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child" and that author states that you don't have to put them down awake every single time (sometimes it doesn't work, especially if they are overtired) as long as you do it some of the time baby will learn to self-soothe.

I'd recommend keeping at it.  We've been doing it for a month and the first week or so was not very successful, but LO is getting easier and easier to put down now.

  • I might have to try this. Hannah was showing signs of growing out of her need for the swaddle so we quit that. We've been having trouble with putting her down and her waking up now.
