Nursery Furniture Question XP

I also posted this on facebook, but since I know many of you aren't members of the group, I'm copying it to our board. :)

We haven't ordered our furniture yet. We may or may not be moving within the next couple of months, so we've sort of been putting it off. This is of course driving me crazy because I want nothing more than to start working on a nursery. We've decided that if we haven't found a house we like by December 1, we're replacing the guest bedroom with a temp nursery. Anyhow, I was reading my Baby Bargains book and they suggest ordering around 25 weeks because it can take 10-12+ weeks to come in at times. Are you freaking kidding me?! That's crazy!

So, my question for those that already have their furniture or have ordered it, how long did it take to come in? Where did you order from? We're trying to decide if we should order now just to be safe, rather than waiting until we're in the new house. Thoughts?

Re: Nursery Furniture Question XP

  • Do you know that you'll be moving for sure [just not sure when]?

If you know you'll be moving but just not sure if it's before or after LO I'd suggest getting a PnP to use until you finalize your plans. You'll probably want a PnP anyways so that's a good option to use for a little while.

Our daughter will be in a PnP for 6 months because we're moving in June and we only have a 1BR here so there's no room for a crib.

  • If you order from Walmart or Target, which has some Baby Bargains-approved brands, it will only take a week.

  • We ordered our crib, mattress, dresser, and glider online from cribs.com, Amazon, wayfair.com, and Walmart. They all arrived in about 1 to 1 1/2 weeks.

  • If you choose to get a crib, I would stay away from particle board, since they aren't meant to be taken apart and put together multiple times.  Look for something that doesn't have the quarter-turn bolts.

We ordered mine off of Amazon and got it in about one week.  10-12 weeks seems excessive!

Yes! We're definitely moving. We were house hunting a couple months back and even put a couple offers in. However, we then learned that the type of loan we were getting required us to sell our current home, which we definitely don't want to do. We want to rent out our current home.

So, long story short, we had to change the type of loan we were getting, which took longer to get things situated and approved. We're now ready to begin looking again, with the conventional loan, we're just not sure how long it's going to take us to find a place we love. We don't want to settle. So, yes, we're basically positive we'll be in a new home within the next 6 months max. We're hoping to have moved before Eliana's arrival though.

We own a 3bed/3bath townhome now. So, we have technically have space. The problem is that the room next to us upstairs is the guest bedroom and the downstairs room is a workout room. We'd need to move the furniture out (and store), then move the nursery stuff in. Either way, we need to clear out space for her stuff anyway - clothes, all the baby items, etc.

I think we'll wait a bit longer for the furniture. Maybe we'll know a bit more within the next month or so. :)

  • We haven't ordered ours yet.

We need to use the room as a guest room until the end of November, so we will be transitioning then.  We are planning to order from Babies R Us.  They have numerous sets that deliver within 1-2 weeks.

  • I think it depends on where you want to buy it from. We got ours from a furniture store. My mom ordered it for us (she's the best) the first week of September, and it will be coming some time in the middle of November.

But it sounds like you can get a lot of really nice stuff really quickly from online ect. Like all furniture purchases: depends on the source.

  • We haven't ordered it yet, but we are getting the Graco Charleston from either Target or Walmart and I think it only takes a week.

  • We ordered from Walmart online (they have a lot more online than in the store) & had it delivered to a Walmart close by & were able to pick it up in a week. We LOVE it & it was quick.

  • We ordered from BRU and it took about 2 weeks. You need to make sure they have it in stock though and it's not on backorder.

  • We ordered a Baby Cache crib from BRU last Tues and it was here on Fri so less then a week.  We thought it would take a while too so that's why we ordered it so early.  I guess it depends where you get it from.
  • We ordered ours from BRU (Baby Cache).  It took about a week to come in, so we were not at all prepared (we had also heard 8-12 weeks).  Fortunately, we were able to put off delivery for about 3 weeks so we could dispose of the furniture that was in the room at the time.

  • Ours will take around 8 weeks to come in.  It depends on the manufacturer and a whole host of other factors.  Every manufacturer, retailer, etc. does things differently so you will want to check for your situation.
