Afraid of the dark?

In the last few months, DS has become increasingly afraid of the dark. He used to sleep in a totally dark room without a night light or anything. Around Christmas, he started asking for a small night light. Over the past few months, he's become increasingly hesitant to enter even slightly dark rooms (even when you can see everything, because the sun is shining through the closed curtains), Last night, he ran screaming from his room because he was so scared. I had to dig out a star light we bought years ago...it pretty much lights up his whole room. He was ok after that. But tonight, he ran out of his room again because he was afraid, even though he had his night light AND his new star light.

He's the king of stalling, so maybe that's what it is? Anyone else have a kiddo who's afraid of the dark? How do you handle it?

Re: Afraid of the dark?

  • Ugh, yes.  DS is going to be 4 in October, and it has been at least 6 months of sleeping with the overhead light on.  He used to be cool with the closet light.  We lessened the wattage of the bulb, but ugh.  He mopes around all day and I think he is not sleeping well, but the minute he wakes up and the main light is off, he freaks out.  I really hope it is a phase that he is about to outgrow.

  • DS1 (just turned 5) is scared of the dark.  He goes to bed every night with his closet light on and his closet doors open.  I don't turn it off when we go to check on him on our way to bed, I don't want him to wake up and be afraid.  He always wakes up 1/2 through the night and comes to snuggle in our room, he turns it off then (he has a whole routine, turn off the light, go potty, and wash his hands).  Heck, I'm 28 and still get a little nervous in the dark at times.  I'm not saying that your DC isn't stalling, but it could easily be a legitimate fear.
