Babies: 3 - 6 Months

New Health Canada guidelines on introducing solids...

Has anyone talked to their pediatrician about the new guidelines, with respect to introducing meat as one of the first foods babies get? Seems a pretty far departure from previous recommendations. I also know guidelines are different in the states, so I was curious what the American mommies on the board thought about it. Here's a link to an article about this:

Re: New Health Canada guidelines on introducing solids...

  • It not all that new. It was a recommendation back when DS1 started solids.  I think anything goes now when it comes to feeding solids as long as you're not feeding any of the higher risk foods.

For DS1, we started with cereal, meat, veggies and fruits at the same time and quite purees right away and started on BLW. He was eating table food by 8 months.

We're going to do BLW with DS2 and see how it goes.

  • I saw that as well but I'm not too worried. DS has tried carrots and cereal and I think the main reason is because at 6 months their iron stores begin to deplete. By then he will have had meat.
  • This was the information the public health nurse gave me on my new mom visit (in June), including starting "high risk" foods right away. I planned to follow those recommendations.

It's funny though because I have two friends that had babies in January and one is just thinking about introducing meat now, and it isn't even on the other's radar. Things change so fast it's almost impossible to be doing the "right" thing all the time.

  • That was interesting.  We did BLW with ds (& will w dd as well) and started out w fruits/veggies first.  He had meat by about 7 months although possibly 8.

  • I read that too. We are planning on doing BLW, though, so will introduce meat earlier anyway.
