Dental and Vision Coverage for LO

This year, when I was registering DS on our health insurance, I only put him on our medical plan.  However, I was not entirely sure of when to add him to both our dental and vision plans. I think I am going to add him to our dental plan for 2013 and our vision plan for 2014.

The reason I ask is that I just went to my ophthalmologist today who suggested that I get DS's vision checked before he turns 3 as they can still do something to fix his eyesight if something is wrong.  I figure in 2014, he'll be just over 2 years old, which still gives time.  As for dental coverage, most of everything I read says to bring LO before his 1st birthday.

If you have dental and vision coverage, did you already place your LO on your plans? If not, when do you plan to?

Re: Dental and Vision Coverage for LO

  • My dentist said we didn't need to bring him in until he's 3 or so, but I'm going to check that with my pediatrician.  As for vision, I suppose I'd worry about that when he's old enough to do the vision test as it requires the subject being able to identify shapes.  When he can readily identify shapes, I'll get his eyes checked.  I'm not expecting any problems though as DH doesn't need glasses and I only needed mine when I became a teenager.

  • My dentist said to start bringing in LO between 2 and 3 years old, depending on when she's ready. He said that around that age children are more cooperative. or maybe it was around 2 either way kid being able to let the dental staff clean / inspect teeth is the key.

  • DD has been covered with dental and vision insurance since birth. Just easier that way and it's not any more expensive to have her covered since my insurance automatically went to the family plan when I added DH and DD in January.

  • Here they recommend you have an eye exam for baby before 6 months.  I took both girls in in August when I went for mine.  It was my oldests second exam and obviously first for my youngest.

I would recommend getting vision from the get go because there are diseases and problems that can be easily fixed early on but not so later (my niece has a lazy eye that they didn't catch until too late so now she needs glasses where as if it was caught earlier a patch would have worked.  She was 3 when they diagnosed it).

  • I added DS at birth. I want him covered if we need either service unexpectedly.

    Oh thanks for that info.

Our ophthalmologist doesn't do children and recommended a pediatric one. I'm concerned partly because both DH and I need glasses.

I think the first dentist appointment is more about cleaning; when I go in to my dentist in October, I'll ask him his views.

So, it looks like I'll be adding DS to both vision and dental this year.
