Exercising Post C-Section

When can you start exercising regularly after a c-section? Also, it has been 2 weeks since my c-section, can I go for short walks or is it even too early for that?  I heard that fresh air and walks are good for babies.  If 2 weeks post-procedure is too early, about when can I start taking him for walks?  Thank You!

Re: Exercising Post C-Section

  • My OB told me to start walking six days after the section. He said I could start vigorous exercising after six weeks if I pass his tests.

  • I"m not allowed "real" exercise until 8 weeks PP. Walking is fine immediately though.

When I say "real" exercise, I mean abdominal work, and classes and workouts.......

  • Going for walks is good, just be careful to not do too much too soon. Do started exercising at 6 weeks last time but pushed myself too hard, started bleeding again, got real sore at incision site, and stopped exercising altogether. Then I got knocked up. I plan to take it slow this time.

  • I went to the mall at about 3-3.5 weeks PP. I was running behind and the mall was closing. I walked really fast down the mall, and HOLY COW it hurt so bad that night and the next day. Every muscle hurt.

I know it sounds stupid, I was just mall-walking, but it was too much for me.

  • Last time I started walking 1 wk after c/s.  Try it, if you start feeling bad then stop.

  • I started walking 3w post c/s it was too hit before that and did it pretty strenuously 2 days in a row... 2 walks/day. I ended up popping my incision open so don't do that! I was back walking daily around 5 weeks.

  • A nice gentle stroll is great. Avoid hills and walking too quickly. If you are taking a stroller I suggest you have company in case you get tired. You'd be surprised how hard it is to push a stroller.

Do not do any running, jogging, power walking or anything strenuous until at least 6 weeks PP. Then start very slowly.

  • I went for short walks starting around 2 or 3 wks. Can't remember exactly, but it was March and there was ice, so I waited until I felt strong enough to not slip. I started a post-partum cardio and sculpt class at 9wks pp but had to modify the ab/core exercises.

  • I started walking as soon as I got home, so 4-5 days after.  At my two week appointment, I asked to start jogging and the doctor said as long as it didn't hurt to get started, but take it easy.   So, by six weeks, I was jogging (slowly) about 2-3 miles.  I had a really easy recovery though and was running/spinning all the way until the end of my pregnancy.  I'm hoping it's just as easy this time through.

  • I started jogging on the treadmill at 4 weeks.  It's different for everyone.  I think it depends a lot on your level of fitness before the operation and how well your body is recovering.  You just have to be careful not to push too hard.

  • My OB told me that I could start with walks as soon as I felt comfortable.  I ended up waiting about a week, then starting gradually with short walks around the block only when my husband could come with me.  By two weeks out, I was comfortably walking solo and pushing the stroller 1-2 miles through my hilly neighborhood, although I was taking it at a relatively slow pace.  At four weeks, I took a 3.5 mile walk on a very hilly greenway, picked up the pace quite a bit, and didn't have any problems... I decided that I was pretty much completely recovered by that point.

My OB cleared me to return to any exercise that was comfortable at 6 weeks, and I started Couch to 5k one week later (at exactly 7 weeks).  I was a little nervous that running would be uncomfortable, but was really surprised at how great it felt.  (I'd been on activity restrictions / modified bedrest since the middle of my 2nd trimester, due to elevated heart rate and blood pressure, so it was great to get moving again!!)

  • I started running about 4 weeks pp after my RCS.  I started going for walks when I was discharged from the hospital.  But, I ran through my entire pregnancy and went for a 3 mile run the night before my c-section so I was in pretty good shape.

  • I started walking at 1wk and running at 3wks. I was told to do whatever I felt comfortable with. I had my PP checkup at 4wks and was cleared for everything except ab work and sex.
