April 2013 Moms

Hobbies?

Is anyone here a SAHW or Mom? what do you do for fun? I stopped working in July and I feel like I need to pick up a hobby or something since I'm not doing much these days. Any suggestions? I've always been a writer, but I want something I can do that doesn't involve a computer. I'm not really good at anything crafty. I was thinking of painting, but I can't draw.....

  • Even if you're not very crafty, crocheting is simple and relaxing.  I could never get the hang of knitting, but crochet is easy.
  • I'm a SAHW. I'm in a bookclub, I exercise a lot or used to, hang out with my girlfriends when they are free, shop, and do some craft stuff here and there. I used to volunteer but had to stop when I started IF treatment. Before I was pregnant I spent a lot of time walking my dog.

  • I quit my job in August and haven't found a new one yet. I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I went from working over full time to nothing. I need to start up a hobby. Sorry, I don't have any suggestions!
  • I'm a SAHM, but I'm also a FT student (online classes). I also coach a team for SD, volunteer in the classroom, work with the youth at our church, etc. If I had any time left over, I would like to volunteer with CASA or the local food pantry, learn spanish, learn to crochet, make crafty things (like holiday decor/wreaths, etc), start a garden, go wine tasting, etc etc etc. Maybe someday I'll have five minutes to spare...
  • I'm going to be a stay at home mom eventually, but currently work full-time. Running is my main hobby, but I also love horseback riding, graphic design (computer-related... woops :s), drawing, biking, etc. A little bit of everything! Volunteering at church.. etc.

    There's some ideas anyways!

I feel like an idiot then Embarrassed  I can not get the basics of crocheting! I've tried and tried, read books, viewed videos... Does anyone have any tips so I can actually make use of that needle and yarn? Smile

I really like reading, or you could start a prenatal exercise routine (approved by dr/midwife, of course!)... That's all I have for now, lost some of my ideas there. I have my hands full with my DD (just 1 yo) so fingerpainting is probably not a valid suggestion for you on that end Smile

  • Just my two cents, but as someone who wants to spend less time on the computer but can not seem to figure out crochet to save my life; I have been using a circle loom. I've seen them at walmart and hobby lobby and such but you can make hats, scarves, even blankets with some of them and they come with picture directions. Gives me something to take my mind off of my nausea when DH is home after work to help with our 3 year old. Also is helping get me started on Christmas presents. :)

I'm going to have to look for this... It sounds fun and something I might actually not be able to screw up! Big Smile

Lol!  I was going to say the opposite!  I love knitting, but crochet confuses me.  (I like having all of my working stitches visible on the needles!)

  • I joined a book club and a stay at home mom's group.  My husband was getting concerned that I was spending my days talking to an infant and a cat.  When I gave up wearing shirts altogether he thought it would be good for me to start getting out of the house more.

As for doing things that are crafty.  It takes practice.  No one starts out good.  Pick something and stick with it. I prefer knitting myself.  My best friend likes crochet.  If you have a local yarn store they are great about offering classes and lending support to new crafters.  GL!

  • Volunteering is a great idea!  So is exercising, if you have any energy (I don't yet).

I like to quilt.  My mom taught me some things when I was little and I got a used sewing machine for cheap and am using the internet to try to make some baby quilts for my nephew (being born in January) and my LO!
