BM Souring Quickly???

I'm still new to pumping and introducing bottles.  I know BM is supposed to be good in the fridge for up to 7 days.  However I  went to make a bottle for DH to give DD.  I had BM from 3 differant days (6 days old, 5 days old, and 3 days old.)  I smelt them all and they all smelled sour.  So I tasted them all and they all tasted sour too.  The older they were the more sour they smelled and tasted.  So I dumped them all.  Thankfully I had some that was just pumped that morning.  It smelled fine so we gave her that.

However, just out of curiosity, I smelled and tasted some fresh BM after my next pumping session.  It smelled fine, but I still think it tasted sour (not as sour as the older milk though).  I've heard BM tastes sweet?  But maybe I just don't like the taste of BM.

So I'm wondering . . .

  • Does anyone else find that their BM goes bad quickly?  Sooner than the 7 days in the fridge?
  • Does anyone else find that thier freshly pumped BM tastes sour?  Even before it goes into the fridge?

At 20-week anatomy scan found IUGR (Intrauterine Growth Restriction), and very low Amniotic Fluid.  Now, I'm High Risk and have weekly ultrasounds to monitor fluid and growth.  If baby runs out of room or is too growth restricted, they will deliver ASAP.  My current goal is to make it to 28 weeks!

Re: BM Souring Quickly???

  • My BM also would start smelling and tasting bad after ~4 days and when I froze it early on and pulled those bags out, they smelled and tasted "off" too and LO wouldn't take the milk.  By the time I realized, I had ~100 oz already frozen but luckily, if I mixed it 50:50 w/ fresh BM then LO took it just fine.  Once I realized the frozen was also "sour",  I ended up scalding all my pumped milk starting at ~ 3mo.  Our system was to pull half of what LO needed out of the freezer and mix it with equal amts of fresh that I had pumped that week.  This allowed us to use milk w/in 3 days or be able to scald and freeze before 3 days were up.

I wouldn't worry much about taste or smell (look at the kellymom.com website for info) if LO will drink it.  We ended up doing the stuff above b/c LO wouldn't drink sour tasting milk.  Scalding was a pain but worth it for LO and we got more efficient w/scalding/freezing by the time 1 yr was up.

You might have an excess lipase issue.  My older milk doesn't taste good...it's a bit metallic-y. My baby doesn't care, though, so I give it to her. She won't eat milk that's actually sour.

I thought excess lipase made your milk smell soapy???  Not sour???  But its a possibility.
