Gag me with a toothbrush !

Brushing my teeth/tongue gags me so bad! I spend the next 5 or so minutes gagging in the sink!

Re: Gag me with a toothbrush !

  • Oh...teethbrushing is the WORST for me. I gag and then just like you spend a while trying to recover from the gag-epsiode! I've even thrown up a couple of times from it. Sucks.

  • This is my biggest concern...honestly!  With C i would literally throw up each morning when I brushed my teeth...it was gross!  I ended up brushing my teeth less because i dreaded it so much!  I turned into a huge gum chewer.  I think it helped to watch tv or occupy myself to keep my mind of it.  I hope it doesn't happen this time but i think it might in a few weeks :(

  • It's the worst!  I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue this time around, but no such luck.  I find if I spit more often & prevent having too much foam in my mouth (that sounds soooo dirty), I don't gag as much.

  • I had this problem when pregnant with DD. I found using one of those spin toothbrushes helped, because I didn't have to push it near the back of my mouth. I could just hold it there.

  • I've had this issue with both pregnancies and switching to a very mild flavored toothpaste (Tom's kid's strawberry) has helped so much!  I haven't thrown up in 2 days!

This is such a good idea. I really need to try a spin brush. I really only gag when I have to push the brush to the back of my mouth so this makes a lot of sense. Thanks!

  • Yes, I know what you mean. I have a hightened gag reflex as well and have even gotten sick brushing my teeth a number of times.

  • Yuck, it made me sick even before I was pregnant. Now I actually dread brushing my teeth (but, alas, I cannot skip it).

  • The only time I've thrown up out of any of my pg's is after I brushed my teeth a week or so ago.  When I was pg with my twins I would gag constantly when brushing my teeth but I was able to keep everything down.  Good luck.  It will pass, but I know it's hard for now.

  • yes!! i'm on my third day in a row of post-brush barfs. i've tried brushing in the shower (ended up leaning out of the tub to the trash can), brushing LAST thing before i leave in the morning (barf), not looking at myself in the mirror while brushing (lol and barf)...nothing has helped.

i can't figure out if its the sensation of the paste in my mouth, the spitting action or the taste of the mint. sigh.

  • It is horrible but I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one!
  • me too :(   for me it's just brushing my tongue, though, so I guess I'm lucky.
