Edie and other "-ie" names

What do you think of Edie? I'm kind of liking it right at the moment. It's a nice alterative to Eve/Evey which is gaining alot of popularity.

I like alot of names that have -ie on the end. What do you think of -ie names. Do they age well or not?

Do you have a favorite -ie name?

Re: Edie and other "-ie" names

  • I think Edie is a cute nn.

In general I prefer -ie names as nn's.

  • I like Edie, but only as a nickname. I feel like it could be mistaken for Eddie, if someone wasn't careful.

My favorite "ie" name right now is Elodie.

EDIT: The name Eden could also work with Edie as a nickname.

  • I do like Edie. I have to be honest though, -ie is a little nicknamey and young for my taste. I much prefer -y. Edy just looks silly though, so to me that would be an exception.

  • I love Eden and would totally use the nn Edie, but I'm not sure I would use Edie as a stand alone name.  I tend to think -ie names are mostly nicknames.

I like a few of them Halle [though not ie, same soud], Elodie. For the most part though, no I don't think they age well. I am a Katie and I would love to start going by my full name, Katherine. I do like Edie, but I would rather use it as a nn than a full name. Edith is really growing on me.

Yeah, I really worry about names aging well. I can't say I really like Edith. The only other name I can think of would be Eden and I don't really like it either.

Any other proper names that may use Edie as a nn?

What about Elda, or Elodia ?

  • Love Edie as a nn but not as a stand alone name.  I don't think it ages very well.

  • I work with an Edie and her full name is Edwena. She's in her 20's and hates her full name. The first time I saw Edie on paper I did mistake it for Eddie and thought she was a male.

ETA- I think Elodie is very pretty.

  • We have an Eden because I loved the nn Edie so much!  Too bad DH tends to call her E-dawg over Edie!

Sadie was also in the running.

  • I think "ie" names are typically nicknames, as opposed to full names.

The only "ie" name I considered using for this kiddo was Sylvie.

    I agree.

After seeing the documentary Grey Gardens & then the movie adaptation on HBO, I can't help but think of the two wackadoo Kennedy relatives with that name. (Little Edie & Big Edie).

  • I like it and dissagree with everyone who thinks it doesn't age well. But then I have an Aubrie (probably wouldn't have been spelled that way if I'd had TB at the time) and a Lillie, so I guess i like the ie ending.

  • I like Edie, but agree that most -ie names work best as nns.  Others I can think of are Tillie and Millie.

  • I just can't like this name as I used to work in an office where one of our patients was an Edie and the woman was CRAZY. Like a few cards short of a full deck. So I would never name my child that lol.

But as a Whitney, I don't really have a problem with the ie ending or sound. I think you just get used to it. I don't feel like a 7 year old at all.

  • Ainsley has always been my favorite -ie/y name

  • I think Edie is a nickname for Edith and I don't like nn's to be used as legal names.  Although I do like Edie and don't actually care for Edith.

I wouldn't have thought of using Eden as a full name, but I like that, so in your circumstance, I would go with Eden.  Good luck!

  • I am a Carrie and I don't think that the "ie" screams "young".
