High-Risk Pregnancy

A different kind of high risk

Hello all! I am trying to find anyone who might be in the same boat or close to as I am. I am high risk due to congenital birth defects. I was born without a thyroid gland, at 19 my pituitary gland gave out and caused me to suffer from adrenal insufficiency. Now I am always treated for adrenal insufficiency and my pituitary gland has made a comeback though, since I am pregnant we can assume it. I am 15w3d and am starting to really put together my birth plan idea. I don't plan on having a long 3 page plan, but a small list of wishes. I want to have as natural of a birth as I can, I do have to be shot up with steroids because my adrenal glands won't be able to handle the stress on their own. I don't know if I should only talk to my OB about my birth wants or my periontologist as well. As far as I know my OB will be the only one possibly attending my birth, I know my high risk specializes in c-sections it seems to be. He is probably not used to high risk women really wanting it, I am actually doing so well with pregnancy that my meds have started working better and I am the healthiest I am have been in years. Would you guys recommend that I tell both of them clearly my wants for a natural birth or just my OB. I want to avoid a c-section because my body already cannot heal alone easily, which means my recovery could take longer and I am at a severely high risk for infection. Any input or ideas would be appreciated!

Sorry, no advice but I just wanted to tell you that I was born without a thyroid and I'm actually the reason why they test all babies at birth for thyroid issues! I was tested in what was random research at a Pittsburgh hospital and I'm written up in medical journals.  I've never actually heard of anyone else being born without a thyroid except for me!

I hope you can avoid a c-section but if it's the best for the baby then I hope your body can heal well afterwards!  Have a happy and healthy pregnancy!

Oh wow! I've never actually met anyone either. Everyone looks at me like I am crazy or says they must have to search other parts of the body because the tissue can reside in other places. Why did they decide to test you? I was born at 9bpm and was being called a still birth. They tested me right away and found my levels were so ridiculous and then did the Iodine test. I was born in Oregon and the head of the medical board in the state was so upset with my case. I was also born with a severe case of Jaundice. My mom was scared the whole time I was a baby and young child because I never cried for anything or let anyone know I was hungry or needed to be changed. She was basically told to just take care of me until I passed. It's so sad but amazing that I came through it all.

I actually had a great aunt in my family who we believe to of been born without one as well back in the early 1900's. She had all the classic signs and was mentally retarded especially since medication was scarce for thyroid issues back then. She died at 31 because the family could no longer afford medications by the time she was 22. I have been through soooo many doctors, mostly because I grew up military. But some doctors refuse to see me at all because they say I am too complicated. You don't know how excited I am that you responded. I am 24 and a ftm, we have tried for 3 years. I have been told since I was 12 I may not be able to ever have kids and was already trying to adopt for the last 2 years. So far pregnancy is great though!  I am hoping to avoid a c-section very much but my peri only talks about c-sections, my ob talks about natural birth. So I am very lost, but I know what I want because this may be my only baby. I know if I can live through so much already that I can do it if my body lets me and baby is safe. Thanks so much for the response!

I'd tell both your ob and mfm about your wishes for a natural birth. That way, all bases are covered and in the event things get even more complicated, you can formulate changes in your plan with input from both. And everyone will be on the same page.

I am high-risk with Type 1 diabetes. I also see an OB and a MFM specialist. It is really important for me to manage my own insulin during delivery. I do not want to be placed on an insulin drip as I know it won't keep my blood glucose in check.

I told this to my OB (actually a PA in his office) during my last visit. She basically responded to me like I was out of line for asking as patients are never allowed to do this during birth. She recommended I talk to the Dr and my MFM about it further. I was so blown away by this and ready to fight/find a new OB.

A few days later, I saw my MFM doc. I asked him the same question. His response was a 180 from what the OB PA said. He basically told me that it's completely standard for people on insulin pumps to manage their own diabetes during birth and that he always writes it into his orders/instructions for the OB. The two offices I see work very closely together and have obviously had patients like me before. I was so relieved.

Basically, long story short, you should talk to both doctors about your wishes. Your MFM doc will be able to tell you the risks/benefits of your plan and your OB is important too (since they will be the ones delivering your baby).

Thanks so much. I had asked my MFM at our first ultrasound how birth usually goes in cases such as mine with the adrenal glands and he responded to the effect of that c-sections usually go great. I was a little lost at the moment and also in awe because it was the first time I saw the baby that I didn't really have a response until I left. I see him again on the 18th of Oct and I see my OB on the 17th. So I will be bringing it up at the next appointments with both of them.I know my body well and I know when something doesn't feel right. I know also that I don't know what labor feels like, but I trust myself enough to know when it would be time to give in if there was something not going right.
