Any BTDT mamas still BFing?

DS is 15 months and still nurses 3-4 times a day. I've been going back and forth for a while about when to wean, but he loves to nurse and I think it would be hard on him to wean right now. I had thought maybe I'd go to 18-20 months so that he would continue to get breast milk through the flu season, but now I'm not sure we'll make it that long. I'm kind of expecting/hoping that my milk will dry up in the next couple months because of the pregnancy and then DS will naturally wean.

I probably sound wishy washy about weaning in this post and that's because I am. I love our nursing time and that I have a "secret weapon" if he's inconsolable, but I'd also like to be able to leave him with DH or family more easily. That's been hard because he nurses before naps and bed.

Anyone else still BFing? How long do you think you'll go? Anyone planning on tandem BFing?

Re: Any BTDT mamas still BFing?

  • Wow, sounds exactly like where I'm at with it.  My son is only a year, and I had planned nurse at least until 18 months.  He nurses about 4 times a day and a few times at night too.  I also love nursing him AND don't want to give up the secret weapon (he sleeps in bed with me and nurses before every nap and bedtime too).  Then again, I feel like I need to start handing him over to DH more, because he's very attached to me (though it's also the age/stage, I guess), and I'm going to need to accept more help once the next one arrives.

I hear milk supply goes down at around 4-5 months of pregnancy, and that kids often self-wean when mom is pregnant b/c the flavor changes and they don't like it.

I think about tandem nursing, but then I think about what my life would be like if DS wasn't at least night-weaned....would I ever sleep again!?  As it is we're up 6+ times a night (not always to nurse), but I'm so ready to sleep again.

I'll probably night wean in a few months and take it from there.... :-)

Jeesh was that as all over the place as I think?

No, I totally get why you'd be all over the place. It's a very personal decision and there are definite pros and cons to weaning. I am also feeling like DH is going to need to handle more of the bedtime routing once LO#2 arrives, and right now DS would not be happy if I wasn't part of the bedtime routine.

    This.

BTW, are your boobs sore yet?  I'm remembering how sore my boobs and nipples were last time and cringe at the thought of nursing during that.

I wonder if boob symptoms are the same if you are BF and pregnant

Nope, not yet. But it's still really early. Probably next week. And yea, I am cringing at that too.

  • DS2 and I are still BFing but only 1 x before bed and every once in awhile in the  morning and before nap.  He loves nursing and I do not us stopping any time soon.

As far as plans, we do not have any.  Just going to go with the flow:) That may change at some point but but he is definitely not ready to wean.

  • My DS is 14.5 months and is still BFing 2-3 times a day.  I'm kind of in the same boat as you, some days I want to wean and other days I don't.  I gave him a cup of BM before bed instead of nursing tonight, I'm curious to see how he will do.

I am hoping to have him weaned entirely by 18 months, not planning on tandem BFing.

  • Yeah, my DD is 19 months and still nurses when she wakes up, when I get home from work, and at bedtime.  Sometimes more than that.  It's a big thing for her.  Not sure what's going to end up happening, I'm not thrilled with the idea of tandem nursing, either, but she's clearly not ready to wean.
