Rant/finding a different ped. For lo!

Took Ethan for his follow up for reflux and doctor told us we are over feeding our lo! We give him 3 oz every 2.5 to 3 hours sometimes two hours..... He's 7 weeks and 11lbs. He was 8lbs 10oz at birth.

How many oz do you feed your lo?  I really don't think we are over feeding him.... Maybe I'm wrong, Needless to say we are switching doctors. I haven't been a fan since day one when he argued lo didn't have reflux and GI confirmed he did!

  • Addy is 7 weeks on Monday. She drink 4 oz every three to dour hours. During a growth spurt sometimes three more a couple hours after her normal feeding. I don't think you're overfeeding. If you are then I most certainly am! And she's only about 8lbs

  • A is six weeks today and he eats 5 oz. every 3-4 hours. Overnight he goes 5-7 hour stretches, so overall in a day 20-25 ozs. I say 20 b/c a lot of times he doesn't finish the 5 oz bottle, but always does AT LEAST 4 ozs of it. My pedi said you couldn't overfeed b/c he would spit up if he was too full.

  • I have heard 2.5 oz per pound in a 24 hour period. So he should be taking somewhere around 28 oz in 24 hours. My pediatrician told me you can't overfeed a baby. They spit up when they've had too much. My baby was 10lb 14oz at 5 weeks. She was 9lbsa when she was born. The doctor was not concerned with her gaining 2 lbs in the space of 3 weeks.

  • Mine will eat anywhere from 4 to 6 oz of formula every three hours. Sometimes a 1 to 2 oz top off one hour after a feeding. I also nurse her at 7pm, 9pm, when she wakes up at night and first thing in the AM. She's a piglet though. She'll be 7 weeks Monday. At 5 weeks she was 10lbs 14oz.

  • Charlie eats 4oz every 2 to 3 hours and sometimes he'll want an extra 2ozs afterwards. He also cluster feeds like crazy in the evening and still wakes up to eat every 3 to 4 hours at night. He is 5.5 weeks now and was 13lbs 11oz at his 1 month appt.

  • I definitely do not think you are over feeding. You can't over feed a baby because they will spit up the excess. The first 2.5weeks I was EBF and I had no idea how many oz DS was taking. So the dr had me start him on 3 to 3.5oz when I switched to FF. At his last dr appt. [at 3.5weeks] she said he looked starving because of how he was sucking on his paci and hands and i had literally just fed him in the waiting room. She taught me how to look for hunger signs and then told me to increase it to 4 to 4.5oz. He is now 6 weeks and currently eats 6oz as of yesterday.

Side note: he weighed 8lbs14oz at birth, now weighs 12.1lbs acording to my at home scale, and also has reflux.

  • I bf so I have no idea. I do know that when I pump I get around 4.5 to 5 oz from one breast in the middle of the night when supply is highest so a assume he gets 3 to 4 oz per feeding and he eats every two to three hours with one four to five stretch at night. He was 9 lbs 5 oz at birth and 11 lbs 6 oz at his one month.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I have no idea how much DS eat because I EBF, but I just had to butt in and say that your DS is freaking ADORABLE!!!!!  Love your siggy pics!
  • You didn't say whether your baby eats breastmilk or formula (formula fed babies tend to increase feed volume more than BF), but DD eats exclusively breastmilk and she takes just over 3 oz every 3 hours - more often in the evening when she cluster feeds, but then she sleeps for 4-5 hours. She is in the 11 pound range. I definitely do not think you are overfeeding!

  • I roll my eyes when Drs think babies are eating too much. Babies can't over eat! Lo is mostly bf but when he does take a bottle, he eats 3 oz about every 3 hours.

He is 5 weeks old and just over 11 lbs.

  • LO is 5 weeks tomorrow. He is eating 45 oz. Every 2 hours or hour and a half. LO was 8.9 lbs at birth, he is now 11.4 lbs. Our pedi was very happy with his progress this far. I would call him on it, that seems odd.
