questions for mamas who BF and pump

i am wanting to start building up a stash of milk for when i have to leave LO with DH for an extended period of time, which is going to be coming up here from October to December. LO eats so much though -- every 1 1/2 to 3 hours -- that i'm concerned about pumping and depriving her of food

how are you ladies doing it? and when did you introduce a bottle? did you deal with any nipple confusion? how did you keep it from happening, or how did you work though it?

Re: questions for mamas who BF and pump

  • I pump right after LO eats especially in the morning. I also take fenugreek, drink the the mother's milk tea, eat lots of oatmeal and put flax seed in my oatmeal & yogurt. My LO is 2 weeks today and her 1st week home she refused to nurse so I pumped and bottle fed it to her. She is nursing great now. Good luck!

  • With my DS1 I would pump after he ate for two of his meals. If he ate off one side, I would pump the other and then when he was finished eating I would pump the side he ate on to empty it. That helped build a stash. He was on a bottle from day 1 because he was in the NICU. He nursed until he was three months old and then when I went back to work he would fight to nurse and I was too tired to work through it so I EPed till he was a year old. We had latch issues anyways and my MIL was keeping him and would use different bottles than we were using so I think he got some nipple confusion in our case it was easier to pump and give a bottle
With DD2 I'm staying home so I'm just pumping once a day to build up a stash. Same thing... After she eats usually in the AM.

  • Also, if you pump your body will adjust and know that you need more milk. I'm also eating oatmeal every morning will probably start fenugreek when I go back to work.
  • I pump once a day for 15 mins just to build a small stash for DS's meds and for if I want to go out without him (and have someone else feed him).  I usually do it after his am feeding because my breasts feel fullest then (that also tends to be the feeding he eats the least because he gets a bottle with some milk and meds in it as well).  I usually get somewhere between 2 and 4 oz and right now he generally eats about 3oz the few times we have given him just a bottle.

I'm not help with introducing a bottle because DS was on bottles starting on day 4 because of the meds they had to put him on....never had any nipple confusion issues (which I am grateful for)!

  • I pump every morning from the breast she doesn't feed from. I got almost 4oz this morning!
Also, remember that you'll probably have to pump while you leave her with DH to make up for the missed nursing sessions so maybe your stash doesn't need to be that big.
