Advice for transferring preemie from gavage to bottle feeding

I gave birth at 32 weeks 2 weeks ago. My baby girls is doing really well in the NICU. She's off all meds, gains steady weight, isn't in an incubator, and is learning how to eat with a bottle this week. She's eating up to 36 ml every 3 hrs. Transitioning from gavage feeding to nipple feeding is hard. My baby girl will suck down the first 10 ml just fine, but will tire easily and barely finishes half of her feeding. The rest of her feeding is given to her by gavage. I know she's still young and needs more practice. We even try and burp her a couple times, but she doesn't seem to burp much.

Does anyone have tips for making bottle feelings more successful? Drs say once she successfully feeds from a bottle every feeding, then she's ready go home. I want her to come home soon, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • I know this is frustrating, but really you just have to wait until your LO is ready. The last few weeks of DD's NICU stay we were just working on feeding and I felt like it was taking forever. Then one day, she pulled her NG tube out on her own and finished all of her bottles from that point on. It was like she knew she was ready to get out of there. She went home 2 days later :)
