ASD screenings: What to expect?

So DS has is OT eval today, and his SpEd coordinator from Birth 2 3 was there.  While OT feels we don't have any sensory issues, SpEd Coordinator disagrees and also brought up the ASD screening again with me (which I fully agree with and am anxious to get started with so we can get some answers).

She said we'll talk again when she comes out on Tuesday, but what should I expect?  What kind of evaluations are usually included?  I know she said that we'll do the MCHAT again (which I have already done on my own and have a print out with my concerns listed for her) and she mentioned quickly about hearing tests and lengthy/involved evaluations which "take time".

Can anyone give me a run down on what is usually involved just so I am prepared and not 100% blind?

Re: ASD screenings: What to expect?

  • This is through the school district?

For DD1's district eval, it was very play-based. They had a bunch of different play areas in one room and would kind of guide her from one to another and either make suggestions or see what she did in terms of open-ended play. Her interactions gave them a lot of insight -- did she ask them to continue things she enjoyed, did she suggest things to do, did she engage them; did she know what to do if handed a doll and told it was hungry, examining how much she looked to adults for guidance/shared experience/joint attention, etc. They can pick up a lot from what look like pretty subtle things to a non-professional, IME.

DH took her to the private evals. It involved a lot of developmental questions -- some of which we did ahead of time, some of which he answered while there -- and a series of IQ and developmental tests. One was the ADOS, which is autism specific.

    HTH!
