Newborn sleeping all day?

How much does your newborn sleep?  Mine is 9 days today, and I feel like the past 2 or 3 days he is never awake.  He wakes for a few minutes then it is right back to sleep.  I remember my middle son slept a lot those first weeks, but I don't remember how much.  He is still not back to birthweight so I am now waking to feed, but I am worried he is sleeping too much for some reason.  Thanks!

Re: Newborn sleeping all day?

  • My almost 4 week old is asleep most of the day. Id say her total awake time is 2 hours. But, at 9 days, she was totally sleeping all day long.

  • That's normal and GREAT!!!! Most moms make the mistake of letting their LO stay up too long or assuming that since they are content that they shouldn't be napping. Instead, they should really only be up for under an hour at a time.

Disclaimer: Do what works for you, this is what we do.

We keep an eye on the clock and keep DD2 up for only a certain amount of awake time (which at this age is basically enough time to diaper and feed her). See below for guideline by age. We put her down awake, to fall asleep on her own. No crying necessary. By not letting her get overtired, she is able to fall asleep on her own. Also, by putting DD2 down in her space awake, she does not wake up in a different place than she fell asleep (i.e. she doesnt fall asleep in my arms, then wake in her crib and be scared).

We also swaddle using the escape proof swaddle. I personally swaddle till about 5-6 months old. We thought DD1 hated swaddling, so we stopped at 2 weeks old. Then we found this method at 10 weeks and she fell asleep for 7 hrs that night. It works great for us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K4VdZxwsu4

We also have a fan for white noise and a fisher price aquarium for music/lights to distract her. And, if necessary, a pacifier. I highly recommend a crib attachment thing, like the aquarium, not a mobile. A mobile needs to be constantly wound up whereas the aquarium plays for 18 minutes and has a wireless remote that can turn it on from the doorway.

Guideline for Awake time for babies
    0-4 weeks: 30-45 minutes
    4-6 weeks: 40-60 minutes
    6-8 weeks: 40-70 minutes
    8-12 weeks: 50-80 minutes
    3-4 months: 60-90 minutes
    4-5 months: 1 hr to 1.5 hrs
    5-6 months: 1.5 hours
6-9 months: 2 hours, give or take 15 minutes

  • Our LO is almost 4 weeks...she has 2 long naps during the day, first thing in the morning until around 11, then again at around 2.  She takes little cat naps whenever we're in the car, and then again from around 6-730 before we get ready for bed.  She's in bed by 8 or 830, I wake her up to eat at 10 or 1030 when I go to bed, and she sleeps until 4 when my DH gets up for work.  After she gets changed and eats, she's back down until 730.

I read in the baby book the doc gave us they could sleep anywhere from 15-18 hours a day.

  • According to the handy dandy Baby Connect app, E sleeps about 14-15 hours a day. The rest of the time he's awake it's mostly spent nursing with a small bit of quiet alert time.

  • DD is also 9 days old & just today she really started having significant daytime awake time. I am hoping that means she will not be awake for like 3 hrs in the middle of the night like last night!

but in general, sleeping is what NBs do best & I would not worry.

  • My Son is a week old. He sleeps pretty much all day as well though not necessarily for long spells.
  • Thanks ladies!  He was awake more last evening for a little but then I had to wake him in the middle of the night to eat.  He was awake this morning for about 2 hours, but doesn't seem eager to eat for the last almost 36 hours.  He'll eat, but it isn't the crying, rooting, desperation to eat and that is worrying me.  He was normal before that, getting up, eating often, etc.!
