Here is an update on our baby; sorry it has taken so long, things have been crazy. He was diagnosed with cellular mesoblastic nephroma (stage 3). Last Friday (13 days old) he had surgery to remove his left kidney and the tumor. The tumor was approximately the size of an apple and needed an 7 inch long incision to remove. His surgery was fairly experimental as the tumor burst and bled at some point and the surgeon was very worried that it would be "too soft" to remove. Thankfully, it was completely successful.
We met with our oncologist yesterday and he does not want to do chemotherapy at this point in time. He is worried that since he is so small that he will not respond to it well. The plan now is for him to have monthly scans to see if the tumor has spread and then chemo only if it is needed. Now Nick just needs to figure out his eating and gain some weight and we can be released from the NICU and go home, hopefully in a week or so. We are so ready to be done living out of a hotel and apartment and take our baby home.
Thank you all so much for the thoughts and prayers. I really appreciate it and can't wait to spend my maternity leave at my home and bumping while Nick sleeps instead of in a NICU room.
