3.5 month old with insomnia?

Hey ladies, I hope you're all enjoying mommyhood! :)

I was wondering if Im experiencing this problem alone or am I not alone:

Mine and my husband's son Sebastian is a wonderful baby. Hes very sweet natured and generally seems to be enjoying his young life. The problem is sleep. He doesn't sleep very much at all and when he does, almost everytime he'll spontaneously shoot awake out of nowhere and be perfectly alert like he never missed anything even if hes only been asleep for 10 minutes. I've had severe insomnia my whole life, and thats exactly what happens to me alot of the time. I know its not genetic (atleast I don't think it is), but could it be possible that my son could have insomnia too or is he just too young for that? Do you have any suggestions on what I could do to help him out?

I was diagnosed at age 9 with insomnia and its always been a problem for me, I hope Seb doesn't have to suffer the same fate as his mama. :/

    Sorry you're going through this! I'm not sure about infant insomnia, but one book I found helpful was "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child". While I'm not using the CIO methods described in the book, I thought the chapter on sleep cycles in infants was really informative. If DD just has a brief nap, like 10 minutes in the car, she'll often be alert & happy when she wakes up. If she has a 30 minute nap and wakes herself but is still tired, she's really upset and crying. I usually just try to get her back to sleep for a little bit. If she has an hour or longer nap, she wakes up happy & alert.

    Is it just the naps that are like this or is he waking up constantly during the night?

    Oh ok, thanks I might have to go check that out! And in answer to your question, its usually just naps that he wakes suddenly from but he has woken up like that through out the night ever since he was born before too. :/
