It's been a hell of a year. After three miscarriages and a slew of tests plus a surgery, we have a diagnosis. I have MTHFR with a double copy of the C677T gene. I also have elevated homocysteine levels. Last week I underwent a hysteroscopy with polypectomy and came out with a normal pathology report, thank God. We sit down with the doctor next week to discuss where we are at and I want to be prepared. What questions should I ask? In emails and some short conversations with the nurse practitioner and my doctor, prior to surgery, I have been told that I will be given a prescription for folate, so my body can absorb, and will also be on blood thinners while pregnant, at least through the first trimester. What are the chances of success? I don't think I can handle going through this again. I can't tell you what a blessing it has been to have some answers. I am hopeful to try again but also very scared. Has anyone had this diagnosis and what do you know about treatments and complications/questions I should be asking regarding my diagnosis? Thanks.

So sorry for your losses. I am glad to hear that you got some answers. I have MTHFR compound het (one copy of the C gene and then one copy of the A gene). I found this out after my second loss and so they put me on extra folic acid, b-complex, and baby aspirin in addition to my prenatal. I was also put on two progesterone suppositories a day until week 12 (though that has nothing to do with MTHFR). You will find that MTHFR is quite common (a lot of people have at least one mutation) though not all doctors test for it (and a lot of people don't know about it) and I don't believe they have found a true correlation to increased risk of miscarriage. However, when I originally got diagnosed I did a lot of Googling and found a lot of cases of recurrent losses due to it. Going into another pregnancy was scary because of my previous losses but I did feel better knowing that I was on more medication that time.
When they tested me I didn't have elevated homocysteine levels though. My parents actually got tested as well only because of my diagnosis and my dad actually tested positive for a double copy of the C gene like you and my mom has one copy of the A gene like my sister.
I got much farther along in my pregnancy this past time though (well into the second trimester) though this most recent loss was due to a fluke chromosomal abnormality which is unrelated to my first two losses and doesn't have anything to do with MTHFR.
Due to my MTHFR I was told that I would meet with a high risk OB later on and have some extra ultrasounds to check for blood clots for all future pregnancies.
Sending you lots of hugs.

~*~AL Always Welcome~*~
I'm on baby aspirin starting on CD1, Folgard 2x a day, and when I get a BFP will do daily lovenox shots and progesterone suppositories progesterone is a precaution. I wasnt on anything for the previous pregnacies other than progesterone.
I also have endometriosis and just had a laparoscopy, so my story might get more complicated when I go in for my big appointment next week to discuss that.
There aren't really success stories on this board as everyone is trying to conceive, but there are many of them on Pg/PAL.

I am sorry for your loss. Before you continue reading my reply it mentions pg.
I have a friend who was dx with MTHFR. She also had three recurrent miscarriages before being dx with MTHFR. Currently, she is 24 -25 weeks pg. She is considered high risk but is doing good so far. She has recommended me to get tested as well.
I hope everything goes well for you. Stay strong.
