Sleep regression after taking the paci away - re-sleep train?

We took her paci away  almost a week ago and for the most part she's done OK....but the last 2 nights she starts crying 5 mins after she's down and I have to go back up and rub her back until she falls asleep.

Anyone else have a similar regression?   We're always consistent with bedtime routine, we haven't caved and given her the paci once, she's got several different nightlight type things in her room....

Just not sure if at this age, the same sleep training approach we have used in the past (CIO) is the best way to go, or if there's something else I should be doing/trying?

Oh and we converted her crib to a toddler bed but she doesn't ever get out...she just kneels in her bed and cries for us.

Re: Sleep regression after taking the paci away - re-sleep train?

  • We use the Ferber Method whenever there is a sleep regression.  Usually after he is sick and sleeps in our bed for like a week, we have to start with the sleep training.  It usually only takes one night or two though.

  • We are likely going to experience this same thing next week (which is when we plan to take the pacis away from the 2 year old).  I am terrified of a week or more of sleepless nights.  My thought, though is that I will go in there and help her calm down at least a little, as I will be drastically taking away the coping mechanism that she's been using since birth - she'll need to re-learn how to fall asleep!

  • Haven't been brave enough to take the paci away yet but I fully expect the same thing. My DS is such a creature of habit, I'm hoping that he gives it up on his own before I take it just to make it easier for him.

  • Don't go in after you put her in bed, especially to rub her back. Let her figure it out herself. She will get it. We had to CIO DS at 2.3 yo when we transistioned him to a toddler bed.

  • I have nothing positive to say about sleep after paci removal...Its been 4 months and I have a totally different sleeper. Takes forever to get to sleep most nights, and no matter what time that ends up being, she is up by 6 at the latest. Bah! But every kid is different! In hind sight, I wish I would have waited till she was a little older, maybe I could have helped her to understand it better or something. ( she was 2). I pretty much gave in to peer pressure instead !

  • We Ferberized Sam, even before we took the pacifier away.  We nixed the pacifier a little after 15 months, and I would do it again with the next one!  At this point, I believe you should just let her CIO... as PP said, they'll figure it out on their own, and self-soothing is just so much more beneficial for all involved.  Good luck!
